SB 10.7.1-2 Thus one’s attachment for hearing about material things, which is the root cause of material existence, vanishes, and one gradually develops devotional service to the Supreme Lord, attachment for Him, and friendship with devotees who give us the contribution of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. If you think it fit, kindly speak about those activities of the Lord.

Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Personality of Godhead, who is the Paramātmā [Supersoul] in everyone’s heart and the benefactor of the truthful devotee, cleanses desire for material enjoyment from the heart of the devotee who has developed the urge to hear His messages, which are in themselves virtuous when properly heard and chanted. SB 1.2.17

…..So the ear is open. So therefore the Vedic mantras are called śruti. We have to hear the mantra, Vedicmantra. Just like if a man is bitten by snake,[goes into a coma] he is caused to hear the snake charmer’s mantra—still there are—so that he can become awakened. And it is said in the Cāṇakya Paṇḍita śloka, mantrauṣadhi-vaśaḥ sarpaḥ. Mantra is powerful still—by mantra, a snake-bittenperson can be brought into life. There are still some snake charmers in the villages. In our Māyāpura there is a Muhammadan, he can cure the snake-bitten case by mantra still. Bombay 12/74

So this snake charmers mantra is a material mantra, unlike the Maha Mantra which is the greatest of all Mantras because not only does it release us from material bondage, liberates us, but more importantly, re awakens our original dormant God-Krsna Consciousness !!!

Below we have two opposite teachings by Srila Prabhupada. The topic is whether he is present or not present in his picture.

Now some will think, how is this possible? There can be two different understandings– on one topic ? Yes, and one explanation is that Prabhupada would preach to different individuals or audiences each according to what they could hear or understand. One may get a lower understanding and another would receive a higher understanding.

Below the very first quote is spoken to most probably a hippie crowd in San Francisco in 1967.In the collected teachings book series, Srila Prabhupada was giving very detailed classes from Caitanya Caritamrta in SF at this time. So who knows why he said what he did at that time, because just a year earlier in NY he told people there something the opposite. And later on, over a several year period he said basically the same thing repeatedly, that namely, the Spiritual master or any highly elevated soul IS PRESENT in his picture or photograph. Now lets take a look.

That Kṛṣṇa, I mean to say, Deity is not different from original Kṛṣṇa because absolute. Everything is Kṛṣṇa. Why this Deity should not be Kṛṣṇa? This is quite reasonable. If Kṛṣṇa is everything, why not this Deity Kṛṣṇa? This is also Kṛṣṇa. He can do. He has, His power is just like… If you take my photograph and if you put it in my seat, and I am not here, that photograph cannot act because it is material. But for Kṛṣṇa, His photograph, His statue, His everything can act because He is spiritual. So we should always know that as soon as we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa is immediately there. Srila Prabhupada is present in picture

Next you ask if I am present in my picture and form? Yes. In form as well as in teachings. To carry out the teachings of guru is more important than to worship the form, but none of them should be neglected. Form is called vapu and teachings is called vāṇī. Both should be worshiped. Vāṇī is more important than vapu.

should honor and keep pictures in that spirit. If we throw pictures

Woman: You say you worship the deity photograph of someone who has gone. But the photograph of a spiritual teacher can be very helpful to teach them to love him because the photograph of a spiritual master is not material value, but it symbolizes the truth from which he has come.

Prabhupada: Yes. Those who are spiritually advanced, their photograph and ordinary photograph is different. Just like here is a statue of Krishna. He’s not different from Krishna. The original person Krishna and this statue of Krishna is the same. Simlarly, a spiritually perfect person and his photograph is the same. Because it is in the absolute stage.

Below are two very good points that Prabhupada makes

1.) For the materialists, all their work ends up as ZERO–at death, nobody takes a cent with them. So for a devotee, if we work 75% of the time for Krsna, that means 25% of our time it is for Maya. The 75% goes with us next lifetime, the 25% stays here in the material world. This is a waste of energy.

2.) For the devotees, this argument about taking to spiritual life is a no brainer. Who but a madman would work for nothing? But that is what all karmis or materialistic people are doing.

But for the devotees, Srila Prabhupada is encouraging us all to make this the final lifetime and work now towards that end. Why? Because if you have to work, which we all do, then why not work for Krsna and be finished once and for all with these material problematic bodies and repeated birth/death.?

. It is being automatically done. Two plustwo equal to four. Similarly, whatever we are doing, we are preparingfor the next life. Karmaṇa. Simply material nature has to give you a post: “Now you have done like this. Take this post.” You cannot deny. You cannot say, “No, no, I don’t like this post.” No, you have to take it. So for the karmīs, even they have done their so-called duties very perfectly well, what is the profit? There is no profit, because we are under the control of material nature. But the devotees, whatever little service they have done, that is permanent asset. That is not controlled by nature. That is controlled by God.

…….But they do not believe in the next life, although it is very common sense. Actually there is next life because Kṛṣṇa says, and we can understand the philosophy by a little intelligence that there is next life. So our proposition is that “If you have got to prepare yourself for the next life, then why don’t you take the trouble of preparing for going back to home, back to Godhead?” This is our proposition. You can prepare yourself to go to hell or heaven. That doesn’t matter because that is also temporary. Kṣīṇe puṇye punar martya–lokaṁ viṣanti. After you have finished… Just like you may go to jail or to somewhere else. When your visa or time is finished, then you are free from such life. Similarly, even if we go to the heavenly planet, when the resultant action of our pious activities are finished, then again we are turned down here. So in this way sometimes higher planetary, sometimes lower planetary, we are traveling. Therefore our best business is: “Why not go back to home, back to Godhead?” Kṛṣṇa says, mad–yājino ‘piyānti mam: [Bg. 9.25] “Anyone who is Kṛṣṇa conscious, he comes to Me.” So why not go to Kṛṣṇa? Then the question will be: “What is the benefit of going to Kṛṣṇaloka? What is the difference between going to heavenly planet or any other planet and going to Kṛṣṇa?” The difference is, any planet go, you are under the four material regulation,janma–mṛtyu–jarā–vyādhi: [Bg. 13.9] birth, death, old age and disease. But if you go to Kṛṣṇa… Yad gatvā na nivartante tad dhāma paramaṁ mama [Bg. 15.6]. If you go to Kṛṣṇa, then you don’t get any more chance to come down and take a material body. You can live there eternally blissful life of knowledge. That is the difference.

So any intelligent man should take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, cultivate the Kṛṣṇa conscious business and go back to home, back to Godhead, for eternal life. This mission we are preaching all over the world because Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu wanted it. So to forget Krsna and to become subjected to the condition of

material nature, that is called material life. Material life means to

give up the idea of going back to home, back to Godhead, but making

plan here to be happy. This is called maya, or material life.

What you read below may come as a shock to you, if you are not up on all the changes to the books done by the un-authorized editors of the BBT.

Below we have Jayadvaita swami in Srila Prabhupadas own presence, in a room conversation reading the original version of Bg 7.28 with the purport. And then down below this conversation we have supplied the changed version he has now put into Prabhupadas original BG. It should be noted that at that time, in 1976, in Srila Prabhupadas presence, with Prabhupada listening to his own verse translation and purport, that he did not say anything was wrong with this edition. If there was an error or he did not like it, he would have said something.He was preaching on the basis of what was being read there.

Yet today we have literally thousands (1,000’s) of changes to this same Original BG done by JAS , Dravida and Co. Ironically, it was Jayadvaita swami himself reading the verse and purport himself, while the subtle seeds of envy burned within his devious heart.

Some 10 years later he came out with his “new and improved ” version of BG, which certainly was not the original version which convinced him to join Srila Prabhupada, and become his disciple back in the late “60’s.

Adi 1.46 purport —Influenced by an envious temperament and dissatisfied because of an attitude of sense gratification, mundaners criticize a real ācārya. In fact, however, a bona fide ācārya is nondifferent from the Personality of Godhead, and therefore to envy such an ācārya is to envy the Personality of Godhead Himself. This will produce an effect subversive of transcendental realization.

Note-when someone changes the written words of the acarya this is envy of him because one thinks his own words and realizations are BETTER than his own spiritual masters words. So re writing the books means to criticize the Acarya,thinking “I know better than my own spiritual master”. Especially when that same Acarya told us- not to change one word !

Prabhupāda: Do you have the passage there?

Jayādvaita: Yes. “Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life, whose sinful actions are completely eradicated and who are freed from the duality of delusion, engage themselves in My service with determination.“

Scheverman: Yes, we too see sin as an obstacle to communication and relationship with the Lord God.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Read the purport.

Scheverman: In fact, we define sin as that which separates us from the friendship of God.

Rakṣaṇa: So that means following God’s instructions, such as “Thou shalt not kill,” right?

Jayādvaita: This is the purport. “Those eligible for elevation to the transcendental position are mentioned in this verse. For those who are sinful, atheistic, foolish and deceitful, it is very difficult to transcend the duality of desire and hate. Only those who have passed their lives in practicing the regulative principles of religion, who have acted piously and have conquered sinful reactions can accept devotional service and gradually rise to the pure knowledge of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then, gradually, they can meditate in trance on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the process of being situated on the spiritual platform. This elevation is possible in Kṛṣṇaconsciousness in the association of pure devotees who can deliver one from delusion. It is stated in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam that if one actually wants to be liberated, he must render service to the devotees; but one who associates with materialistic people is on the path leading to the darkest region of existence. All the devotees of the Lord traverse this earth just to recover the conditioned souls from their delusion. The impersonalists do not know that forgetting their constitutional position as subordinate to the Supreme Lord is the greatest violation of God’s law. Unless one is reinstated in his own constitutional position, it is not possible to understand the Supreme Personality or to be fully engaged in His transcendental loving service with determination.”

Scheverman: Yes, we can certainly agree with that.

Prabhupāda: So, we have to teach people how to refrain from sinful activities. (Like changing the books !)Then, when he’s pure, then God will reveal. If we keep them in sinful life, at the same time we want to preach them, it will not be possible. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam it is said that those who are animal killer, they cannot understand about God. Vinā paśu–ghnāt. So if in the human society unnecessary animal killing is encouraged, he will never be able to understand what is God. The greatest sinful activity, paśu–ghnāt. So in human society, unnecessarily animal killing is going on. So they are entangled in sinful activities; therefore they are unable to understand what is God.

Below we have shown the two versions of BG 7.28. The first one is the original, being read by Jayadvaita swami back in Detroit June 15 1976 in front of Srila Prabhupada, who then comments upon that verse and purport. Now some 40 years later we have JAS new version with all his changes additions and deletions of Srila Prabhupadas sacred vani. See for yourself below what he has changed

.So similarly, therefore, this Vedic system always gives us injunction. Tad-vijñānārthaṁ sa gurum evābhigacchet:[MU 1.2.12] “Onemust go to the authority.” And how to become authority? There is no question of research, this research. Just like in the material world one becomes doctorate by research work, here there is no question of research. You simply have to accept what is stated in the Veda. That’s all. That makes you all right. Research is already done. There is no question of taking trouble yourself. You simply accept. Just like Kṛṣṇa says, sarva–dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja:[Bg. 18.66] “You give up everything and surrender unto Me.” And if we foolishly go on seeing, “Oh, why shall I surrender?” as some very learned commentator, “Not to Kṛṣṇa, but somebody else…” Not like that. Kṛṣṇa says, “Surrender.” Surrender yourself and you will see how you are making progress. That is the thing.Krsna says, “You surrender.” You surrender. That will make you happy. There is no question, “All right. Let me research, make research whether by surrendering to Kṛṣṇa I shall be happy.” Go on. You can. If you want, you can go on researching. But you will never be successful to… Even in the Brahma–saṁhitā it is stated, panthās tu koṭi–śata–vatsara-sampragamyaḥ [Bs. 5.34] If you make research in a speed, and the speed is stated, koṭi–śata–vatsara–sampragamyo vāyor athāpi manasomuni–puṅgavānām… Just like if you want to cover a path which is very long, and how you measure its length? Now, by research. What is that research? Now, you go on by force. What is that force? The force of mind and force of velocity of the wind, velocity of the wind and velocity of the mind.And you push on in that way for ten millions or more than years in that way, still, you will find avicintya: you have not reached the goal. Research. If you make your research in such a speed and for many millions of years, still, avicintya–tattva, still it will be inconceivable.

So the best thing is that to believe it, and accept the opinion of authorities, and believe by the activities of God and His incarnation, and submit yourself to get the thing. That’s all.Thank you very much. Any question? (end)

Glories to Srila Prabhupada

Below we have a few statements by Srila Prabhupada regarding crime in both America and India,( and the entire world for that matter).

It has become so bad today, I just heard a news report from a credit card industry person who says that millions of Americans (and others as well) , are at risk of having their credit card numbers stolen and used by international thieves-even if you have fraud and other theft protection !! The criminals have become so expert, that the credit card industry knows it has to issue an entirely new type of card which (at least for now) will thwart the thieves from stealing your personal information and racking up a huge bill in your name.But like car recalls, the pencil pushers (staticians) tell the car manufacturers not to fix all the millions of car defects because its cheaper to settle a few lawsuits out of court than to fix millions of car problems. Even if hundreds or thousands may die from these defects ! Same thing with the credit cards. This the unfortunate situation of the age in which we live. The government cant help you,and the companies who are supposed to be working for you, cant help you.

So who can help you? Nobody !

You have to help yourself– by being smart. How do you become smart?

There is a saying that God helps those who help themselves and this means—

Srila Prabhupada says….In Bhagavad-gītā (9.22) Kṛṣṇa says that He provides for His devotees by giving them what they lack and preserving what they have. People are very fond of saying that God helps those who helpthemselves, but they do not understand that helping yourself meansputting yourself under Kṛṣṇa’s protection. If one thinks, “Oh, I can help myself. I can protect myself,” one is thinking foolishly. As long as my finger is attached to my body, it is useful, and I may spend thousands of dollars to preserve it. But if this finger is cut off, it is useless and is thrown away. Similarly, we are part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa, and helping ourselves means putting ourselves in our proper position as His parts and parcels.Otherwise we are only fit to be cast away. The finger can help itself only when situated properly on the hand and working on behalf of the entire body. If the finger thinks, “I will separate myself from this body and simply help myself,” that finger will be cast away and will die. As soon as we think, “I shall live independently of Kṛṣṇa,” that is our spiritual (and material) death, and as soon as we engage in Kṛṣṇa’s service, as His part and parcel, that is our spiritual life.Therefore, helping oneself means knowing one’s actual position and working accordingly. It is not possible to help oneself without knowing one’s position. POP 1

Madhudviṣa: They have made a survey in America.They have made a survey that nine out of every ten crimes never gets a victim.

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Madhudviṣa: Never gets solved. Nine out of every ten crimes never gets solved in America.

Prabhupāda: No, it cannot be solved.

Pañca–draviḍa: It’s more than that, probably.

Madhudviṣa: So the criminal is very much encouraged, because he has only one chance in ten of getting caught whether he robs a bank or steals or rapes or something like that.

Prabhupāda: But for this purpose they are maintaining huge policeforce, and you are earning money and tax, that’s all.

Rāmeśvara: The police all accept bribes.

Prabhupāda: Eh?

Rāmeśvara: They all accept bribes or they do some illegal business themselves with the criminals they capture.

Prabhupāda: Yes, regular… Every criminal has got organization to bribe the police. And the police does not take directly, and some in-between man, agent, he collects from the criminal and gives to the police. In India this is going on. I know that. A via-media man, he makes fortune. Yes. Whatever is collected, ten percent he takes, and balance is given to the police. There is a confectioner in Delhi. He is selling jalebi. You knowjalebi?

Devotees: Yes.

Prabhupāda: He has got ten lakhs of rupees because he collects the bribefrom others and pay to the police. Everyone knows. There was one Mullik, now, on that Mahātmā Gandhi Road. His business was that. He was collecting. That quarter, our quarter, was full of pocket, pickpockets,guṇḍās. Pickpockets, gundas, in our childhood they were our neighborhood. (laughs) I remember when I was child I was coming, and the pickpocket was pickpocketing, and he was… He was doing like that: “Don’t speak. Don’t talk.” I have seen all this. And whenever there was any riot, so we were accustomed to see everything. When there wasHindu-Muslim riot, one boyfriend told me, “Oh, don’t go to your house. It is… A great riot is…” I thought, “Riot is going on daily.” It was the same thing. [break] …quarter. Induriya prakāra(?)

Bhāgavata: In New York one policeman admitted that when the policewould capture the thieves with the stolen goods, then they would confiscate the goods and keep it privately in their homes and sell the stolen goods and get the money for themselves. They would not return it to the owner, but they would utilize it for making money. So they are also thieves.

Prabhupāda: So if this is the practice in a country which is so opulent, just imagine what is there in India.

…That is the contribution. And for this reason he had to face so many vehement protests from this brāhmaṇa class gosvāmīns. He… They conspired to kill him. Guru Mahārāja told me personally.Others… Because, by his grace, when I used to meet alone, he used to talk so many things. He was so kind that he used to talk so many things with me. So he personally told me that “These people, they wanted to kill me. They collected 25,000 rupees and went to the police officer in charge of that area, that ‘You take this 25,000 rupees. We shall do something against Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī. You don’t take any step.’ ” He could understand that they want to kill him. Just like in your country also, the polit…, Kennedy, was killed. You know. .. So the police officer frankly said, “Of course, we accept bribe, and we indulge in such things, but not for a sādhu, not for a saintly person. I cannot dare this.” And the police officer refused and came to my Guru Mahārāja that “You take care. This is the position.” You see? So vehemently protested. Feb 7 1969 LA

Kali–yuga is full of contamination. This is described in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (12.3.51):

kaler doṣa–nidhe rājann
asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ
kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya
mukta–saṅgaḥ paraṁ vrajet

This age of Kali is full of unlimited faults. Indeed, it is just like an oceanof faults (doṣa–nidhi). But there is one chance, one opportunity.Kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya mukta–saṅgaḥ paraṁ vrajet: simply by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, one can be freed from the contamination ofKali–yuga and, in his original spiritual body, can return home, back to Godhead. This is the opportunity of Kali–yuga.

SB 8.5.23 purport

nāma vinu kali-kāle nāhi āra dharma

sarva-mantra-sāra nāma, ei śāstra-marma

TRANSLATION

” ‘In this Age of Kali there is no religious principle other than the chanting of the holy name, which is the essence of all Vedic hymns. This is the purport of all scriptures.’ Adi 7.74

Prabhupāda: Yes. You have got your intelligence. God has given you intelligence. Now you deliberate. But if you… A devotee, without using my intelligence, I surrender. Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā [Bg.7.19]. Immediately you become the greatest mahātmā. If you simply believe in Kṛṣṇa, “What my nonsense intelligence…? What Kṛṣṇa says, I shall do. Bas.” Your life is perfect. And if you think still that “I am more intelligent (than) Kṛṣṇa, let me deliberate and consider,” then you remain rascal. You cannot be more intelligent than Kṛṣṇa.

He says sarva–dharmān parityajya [SurrenderBg. 18.66], you take it. That is real intelligence. That is real intelligence. Just like obedient son, my father says to do it. “All right, I shall take it, although it does not appeal to me.” That is good son. Natural guardian, father, if son understands “My father or mother, whatever they will say, it is surely for my good. They cannot be cheater.” So intelligent son will take “Yes, my father says, I’ll do it. That’s all. Never mind it does not appeal to me.” That is intelligence, real intelligence. “Because I am immature, my father knows my good, he says ‘My dear son, do it. It will be nice.’ I’ll do it.” That’s all. Without any objection. That is intelligence. That is real intelligence. But the fathergives the freedom, “Now you deliberate.” But it is my duty, when father says, what is deliberation? I’ll accept. That is intelligence. And if you do not do it, then you come tothat karma, na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ . God offers, but the rascal,duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ, narādhamāḥ, will not do it. They’ll suffer. Go on, continue to suffer. He’ll not do it, all right, go on, suffer. Next life if he becomes dog, the ear is there, but he’ll not be able to hear what Kṛṣṇasays: finished. That chance is finished. This is going on.The dog has ear, big ear, bigger than me. But he cannot hear what is Kṛṣṇa saying. That is not possible. But this life I’ve got this ear, I can hear. If I don’t take chance, then how much foolish I am. Next life, tathā dehāntara–prāptiḥ[Bg. 2.13], I’ll get next life, next birth. Now it is not necessarily that I’ll get the next life also same ear. No. The ear may be different. The eyes may be different. The eyes are there, ears are there, nose is, but it is different. So long we have got these eyes, these ears, this nose, utilize it properly. Thatis Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Janame janame sabe pitā mātā pāya, kṛṣṇa guru nāhi mile bhaja… Every birth you’ll get a father,mother. Because without father, mother, there is no question of birth. But not in every birth you’ll get Kṛṣṇa and guru. That is in this birth.Birth you can have. But to have Kṛṣṇa and guru, that is this birth. So utilize it properly. Janame janame saba pitā mātā pāya, kṛṣṇa guru nāhi mile bhaja… Very nice. That chance you’ll not get. You’ll get body, you’ll get eyes, you’ll get ear, you’ll get father, you’ll get mother, you’ll get food, you’ll get sex, you’ll get defense, everything you’ll get. Tathā dehāntara.But not this chance, kṛṣṇa guru nāhi mile bhaja. You’ll not get Kṛṣṇa and guru. This is the difference. How nice verse it is. Everything you’ll get, but you’ll not get this. How nice it is. Tathā dehāntara–prāptiḥ [Bg. 2.13],another body you’ll get. Another body you’ll get means you will get all bodily facilities. There is no scarcity between this body and that body. But only scarcity is that in other body you’ll not get Kṛṣṇa and guru. We have to remember this. mayapur mar 2 74

Excerpt from class on Lord Caitanya talking about his experience with his spiritual master ordering Him to chant Hare Krsna Mantra. This was addressed to Prakasananda Sarasvati, the mayavadi sannyasi.

Prabhupada mentions the actual symptoms of Love of God will develop in such a chanter. These symptoms of transcendental emotion are far above material religiosity.

” ‘This chanting makes Me obliged to laugh and dance and sing.’ So when My spiritual master heard Me, he replied as follows.”

kṛṣṇa–nāma–mahā–mantrera ei ta’ svabhāva
yei jape, tāra kṛṣṇe upajaye bhāva

Now the spiritual master is explaining, “Yes, this is the right result of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Unless You come to this emotional stage, transcendental emotional stage, You should know that You havenot come to the perfectional stage of chanting. So I am very glad to see that You have chanted very nicely and You have developed the desired result.” Kṛṣṇa–viṣayaka premā–parama puruṣārtha. “Because this emotion means that You are developing love of Kṛṣṇa. And that is required, not that simply by official chanting You remain where You are. You should develop. This, I mean to…, laughing, crying, and dancing is due to emotion of love of Godhead. So this is not bad.” He, I mean to say, informed, the spiritual master of Caitanya Mahāprabhu:yāra āge tṛṇa–tulya cāri puruṣārtha. “Now, the symptoms which You have developed is transcendental and above all other four perfectional stage.”

What are the four perfectional stage? In the material world there are supposed to be four perfectional stage of human life. What is that? First perfectional stage is that when one becomes very expert in following the religious principles. That is also another perfectional stage of common man. You have got your principles of religions, say, either Hindu or Muslim or Christian or Jew. You have got your own Bible or Testament or Koran or Vedas. There are rules and regulation, rituals, everything. So one who follows those rules and regulations, they are called religionist. And what is the effect of becoming religionist? The effect is that you can live very peacefully without any material want. Simply by following the rules and regulation of your scripture, it doesn’t matter in which religion you belong to, but if you follow the rules and regulation, then your life will be peaceful and there will be no material want. That is not, of course, peaceful. You cannot expect any peace in this material world because the major problem is birth, death, old age and disease. So you cannot check this. But somehow or other, your life will be peaceful and more than those, I mean to say, upstarts who do not follow any rules and regulation. You’ll be in better position, far better position than them. So this is one perfection, to become a man of religiosity.

Then, if you become a man of religiosity, then your economic wants will be almost nil. Dharma, artha and kāma. And, if your economic wants are fulfilled, then you can fulfill your sense enjoyment very nicely. We want economic development—why? Because we want to… Ordinary man, who is in the material world, he wants to fulfill his sense… He has got so many demands of his senses, either in this world or in the other world. Suppose a man is trying by his, following the religious principle to go to other planets.What is the purpose of going to other planets, heavenly planets? It is for having a better facility for sense enjoyment. Just like, according to Hindu conception, the heavenly planet, Indraloka, it is said there are very beautiful women and very beautiful gardens, and they can drink soma rasa and enjoy life for ten thousands of years, and their one day is equal to six months of this planet. So opulence, life, enjoyment, far, far greater than this; therefore they want to go to the heavenly planets.Similarly… These are facts. These are not, I mean to say, stories, or fiction. These are facts. Similarly, in the Koran also there is such injunction that if one follows the principles of Koran, in the next life they’ll go to Hur(?), the land of the Hu(?), the same beautiful woman.

Because we have got this material idea, sense gratification, and the last word in the sense gratification is sex life. That’s all. So if we think that “Going to that place, I will have free sex life and beautiful man, beautiful woman, and nice drinking, nice eating,” oh, so materialists, they think, “This is perfection of life. This is perfection of life.”

So dharma, artha, kāma,and the last stage is salvation. Salvationists. What are the salvationists? When a person becomes frustrated by become a man of religiosity, a rich man of economic development, and satisfaction of sense gratification, when he, one has seen that all these things has not given him any peace of mind, then he wants to become out of this scene and become one with the Supreme. This is called salvationist. So somebody is thinking void, somebody is thinking impersonal Brahman. So the last stage is to become extinguished in the void or impersonalism. That is called salvation. Salvation from this material entanglement.

So general people, they have got these four kinds of ideas: religiosity, economic development, sense gratification, and at last monism, or become one with the Supreme. That’s all. ….

So Kṛṣṇa, but Caitanya Mahāprabhu says that this emotion, by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, developing love of God, is far, far beyond these four principles of perfection, above the idea of becoming one with the Supreme.

pañcama puruṣārtha–premānandāmṛta-sindhu
brahmandi ānanda yāra nahe eka bindu

This pañcama puru… This is fifth dimension. One, religiosity; two, economic development; and three, sense gratification; and four, to become one with the Supreme. So above these four, this is fifth. This is the fifth stage of perfection. What is that? Developing love of Godhead and getting emotion out of that. So Caitanya Mahāprabhu says this emotional stage is so transcendental and so elevated that there is no comparison with the other four principles. The perfection of the other four principles is enjoy to become one with Brahman. Caitanya Mahāprabhu says this brahmānanda is just like a drop in comparison with the ocean. This emotion of transcendental love is compared with the ocean, and this brahmānanda, to become one with the Supreme, is just like a drop out of that ocean. So there cannot be comparison.Caitanya Mahāprabhu said that there is no comparison. Brahmandiānanda yāra nāhe eka bindu. Kṛṣṇa–nāmera phala-‘premā’, sarva–śāstre kaya. Kṛṣṇa-nāme: “If you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, then the result is that you develop full-fledged love of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.”

Bhāgye sei premā tomāya karila udaya: “So I am very glad, Caitanya, that You have developed that symptoms by chanting. So it is very good, and it is very nice. You are very fortunate.” Premāra sva–bhāve kare citta–tanu kṣobha: “When one becomes…” Just like a man in love in this material world, also, he sometimes becomes just like madman, so similarly… Material manifestation is simply perverted reflection of the real love. Here there is no love. It is simply a reflection. Because the spirit soul is originally in love with the Supreme, so he is trying to express his loving sentiments or life’s symptoms, but because it is not on the platform of the Supreme, therefore materially they are manifested sometimes, but it breaks. It breaks. It does not exist. So similarly, as in the ordinary love affairs there are so many emotions, similarly, Caitanya Mahāprabhu says this is the nature of love, nature of love. Premāra sva–bhāve kare citta–tanu kṣobha. Kṣobha means there is some agitation, within the mind, of the body. There are so many symptoms. Kṛṣṇera caraṇa–prāptye upajāya lobha: “And the more you increase the symptoms and this emotion, the more you will be anxious to be a sincere lover of God, or Kṛṣṇa.” Premāra sva–bhāve bhakta hāse, kānde, gāya: ‘This is the nature of loving emotion of a devotee, that he sometimes laughs, sometimes dances, sometimes cries.” Unmatta ha–iyā nāce, iti–uti dhāya: “And sometimes he dances like a madman and goes this side and that side. So these symptoms are good symptoms.”

sveda, kampa, romāñcāśru, gadgada, vaivarṇya
unmāda, viṣāda, dhairya, garva, harṣa, dainya

Now these are some of the stages explained, and each item is very important. Sveda: when actually one comes to the perfectional stage of emotion, there is perspiration, perspiration from the body, sveda.Kampa: there is shaking of the body, like this. Yes. Shaking of the body.Romāñca: the hairs stands on the holes, romāñca. Gadgada: he fails to speak. He cannot express his words exactly. Vaivarṇya: there is sometimes paleness of the body. Unmāda: just like a madman. Viṣāda:he becomes morose, very sorry, viṣāda. Dhairya: and calm and quiet. Then garva: he becomes pride, sometimes just like a chivalrous man, pride, proud. Harṣa: ecstasy. And dainya: and humble, humbleness. So these are the symptoms of perfection. So sometimes they imitate. So imitation is no good. It will come. When you are in perfectional stage, these symptoms will automatically come.

eta bhāve premā bhaktagaṇere nācāya
kṛṣṇera ānandāmṛta-sāgare bhāsāya

“All these symptoms means that he is floating in the transcendental ocean of joy, of loving Kṛṣṇa.” That is the actual experience of love. Just like you love somebody, when he comes, meets you, embrace you, oh, you have got some, a particular emotion, similarly, these emotions means that you are in the perfectional stage of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa.

bhāla haila, pāile tumi parama–puruṣārtha
tomāra premete āmi hailāṅ kṛtārtha
[Cc. Ādi 7.91]

So His spiritual master said, “So it is very nice, my dear Caitanya. You have developed all these symptoms. So I am also obliged to You because I initiated You. Now You are so perfectional stage, in aperfectional stage, so I am thinking myself, also, proud, that I have got a disciple like You. Or You have been benefited by me.” So His spiritual master said like that.

nāca, gāo, bhakta–saṅge kara saṅkīrtana
kṛṣṇa–nāma upadeśi’ tāra’ sarva–jana
[Cc. Ādi 7.92]

Now here is another order. The first order is that “You chant.” And when the disciple (is) in the perfectional stage, the spiritual master orders that “Yes, continue this chanting.” Nāca, gāo, bhakta–saṅge kara saṅkīrtana. Nāca, gāo, bhakta–saṅge. Here is the particular word, that “You chant and sing and dance in the societies of devotees, not otherwise.” Bhakta–saṅge. This particular word is there. Because otherwise you’ll not feel quite comfortable. Abhakta. Abhakta means those who are not devotees. They cannot participate with this chanting or dancing. Therefore it is particularly mentioned that bhakta–saṅge:“You chant and dance in the society of devotees.” Nāca, gāo, bhakta–saṅge kara saṅkīrtana: “And Yourself enjoy this chanting and dancing, and at the same time,” kṛṣṇa–nāma upadeśi’ tāra’ sarva–jana, “at the same time preach the Kṛṣṇa consciousness philosophy so that others may also be delivered. Don’t be satisfied that You have attained theperfectional stage, so Your business is end. No. You have to distribute this sense of Kṛṣṇa consciousness to the world so that others may take also advantage.” Kṛṣṇa–nāma upadeśi. Upadeśi means “Instruct kṛṣṇa–nāma, about Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa’s name, Kṛṣṇa’s fame, Kṛṣṇa’s entourage, Kṛṣṇa’s glories, Kṛṣṇa’s form.” There are so many things about Kṛṣṇa. The Kṛṣṇa science is Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,principally, and there are many other supplementary books of knowledge about Kṛṣṇa. So this is also another duty of this line, Kṛṣṇaconsciousness. Āpani… There is another… Caitanya Mahāprabhu said that bhārata–bhūmite manuṣya–janma haila yāra: [Cc. Ādi 9.41] “Anyone…” He is ordering all Indians. Bhārata–bhūmite means all Indians. He does not say the Hindus or the Bengalis or these Punjabis. No. He says particularly, “Any person who has taken his birth in this land of Bhāratavarṣa,” janma sārthaka kari, “you just perfect your life. Just perfect your life,” and kara paropakāra, “and distribute this knowledge for benefit of all other people.”

So this injunction is received, as Caitanya Mahāprabhu says, that “First of all make your life perfect. Don’t try to preach without becoming yourself perfect.” The nonsense thing is going on in this world that so-called preachers, they have not perfected their life, but they have become preachers. They have not already perfected their life, and they have become preacher. Therefore they are bringing so many nonsense things and misleading persons, Vedāntists and VedāntaSociety, yogis, this or that. But they are not themselves perfect. SoCaitanya Mahāprabhu said that “Before becoming preacher, before endeavoring yourself to do good to others, you just perfect yourself.” “Physician, heal thyself.” Physician, you are yourself diseased. How you can become a physician? People will, at once, will be detracted, “Oh, this doctor, this medical man, he’s suffering from fever, and he’s treating my fever.” So there will be no, I mean to say, effect.SoCaitanya Mahāprabhu says, or His spiritual master says, that kṛṣṇa–nāma upadeśi’ tāra’ sarva–jana: “First of all You have perfected Yourself by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. You have come to the perfectionalstage. Now You have got the symptoms of emotion. Now You can preach Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma,Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.” Yes.

eta bali’ eka śloka śikhāila more
bhāgavatera sāra ei–bale vāre vāre

Now Caitanya Mahāprabhu says that “My spiritual master, after instructing Me in this way, he has taught Me one very nice verse from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavata.” What is that?

evaṁ vrataḥ sva–priya–nāma–kīrtyā
jātānurāgo druta–citta uccaiḥ
hasaty atho roditi rauti gāyaty
unmādavan nṛtyati loka–bāhyaḥ

When one becomes actually devoted to Kṛṣṇa consciousness and takes pleasure by chanting his object of love, druta–citta uccaiḥ, his mind becomes perturbed by such chanting. And then hasaty, hasaty, he laughs; atho roditi, sometimes cries, roditi; and rauti, and, by seeing him, others also cry; roditi, rauti; gāyati, and chants very loudly;unmādavan nṛtyati, and dances like a madman, nṛtyati; loka–bāhyaḥ,and he doesn’t care that “Somebody is looking upon me just like I am madman.” He doesn’t care for them. This is the perfectional stage ofchanting.

ei tāṅra vākye āmi dṛḍha viśvāsa dhari’
nirantara kṛṣṇa–nāma saṅkīrtana kari

Now Caitanya Mahāprabhu concludes… Because you might always remember that He is speaking to Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī. So He said that “With full faith in the words of My spiritual master, I chant thisHare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare, and I have no other business.” Nirantara kari. Because He was… He raised the question ofVedānta, studying Vedānta, so He is answering, “This is My position. I am just following the instruction of My spiritual master. In the beginning, he taught Me like this. He instructed Me like this. Then I followed. I have developed these symptoms. Then again I approached My spiritual master. He confirmed the same thing. Therefore My business is to follow his instruction, and therefore I am alwayschanting and dancing.”
