Srila Prabhupada re: the definition of a demon
Every morning, a different devotee comes up to Paradisio to visit Swamiji for a day. Although there is no formal initiation ritual or fire sacrifice, Swamiji chants on the initiates’ beads and bestows spiritual names: Aniruddha, Uddhava, Murari, Devananda.
One day, when Janaki visits, she takes exception to the painting of Lord Nrishingadev tearing out the entrails of the demon Hiranyakashipu. “It’s really ghastly, Swamiji, she says, making a face.
“For the devotees, it is beautiful,” he says. “The devotee praises Lord Nrishingadev: dalita hiranyakashipu tanu bhringam. ‘With the nails of Your beautiful hands, you have torn apart this wasp-like demon.’ Hiranyakashipu was such a great demon that he even tried to kill his small son, Prahlad Maharaj, just because he was a devotee. So the Lord killed Hiranyakashipu to protect His devotee and liberate the demon.”
“But there are no such demons now, Swamiji,” Janaki says.
“Oh yes,” Swamiji says. “Demon means nondevotee.”
“Maybe we shouldn’t call them demons,” Kirtanananda suggests. “People will never come if we call them demons.”
“But they are demons,” Swamiji says. “If you are not a devotee, you’re a demon.”
“Aren’t most people somewhere in between?” Kirtanananda persists.
“‘In between’ means demon,” Swamiji says.
“But most people never heard of Krishna,” Kirtanananda says. “How can they be called demons?”
“Everyone has heard of God,” Swamiji says. “Krishna is God. Anyway, they may be innocent; therefore we are informing them. But actually, because they’re here in this material world, they are not really innocent. Somehow, they’ve chosen to forget Krishna, and are therefore demons.”
“I thought that in Krishna consciousness, you see Krishna in everyone,” Kirtanananda says.
“Yes,” Swamiji says, “Krishna is also in the demon. But does this mean that we aspire to be demons? Unless you distinguish between demons and devotees, you cannot progress in Krishna consciousness.”

Regarding propaganda against animal slaughter in BTG (Back to Godhead) magazine, please do not print any picture showing how a cow is being murdered in our BTG. This will pollute the whole atmosphere. We are not meant for moving anyone’s sentiment against animal slaughter, we are neither Buddhists or Jains, whose main propaganda is against animal slaughter. Even the so-called vegetarians who do not take Krishna prasadam are as much sinful as the non-vegetarians.

“Dear Lord, the Vedic knowledge is the representation of Your pure heart. Austerities, study of the Vedas, and meditative trances lead to different realizations of Your Self in Your manifested and nonmanifested aspects.

pulling the weeds of material desire out of the heart
Getting rid of unwanted weeds in the heart—
Below we have a fairly good look at what happens to the practicing Hare Krsna devotee who does not take care to observe and stop any or all offenses he or she may be making in the process of trying to cleanse his or her heart, by chanting Hare Krsna maha mantra.
The very first item is a conversation with Srila Prabhupada where he explains that to chant Hare Krsna (like for a professional musician ) is very nice, but for that chanting to become more effective it has to be done within the actual process recommended by our Acaryas-otherwise, if we know about this process and still avoid correcting ourselves, then those knowingly committed offenses will eventually curtail what ever growth we have made by that same chanting. Many warnings below by Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaja, and others.
The last section warns us also to avoid those persons who pose as Vaisnavas yet are very jealous of the success given by the Lord to other devotees. There are so many things (offenses to chanting) that could be elaborated upon, but I chose only a couple just to keep this article somewhat brief. One could probably write books upon this one subject only, it is so important.
Srila Prabhupada has said many things on this subject of offenses to chanting. One of them is this-dont be surprised who comes, but be surprised who stays”. By this I take it to mean that so many will be attracted to Krsna, which is natural, but to stay with it, and not leave means we have to become vigilant in our consciousness and daily lives. Anybody who has been “around” for several decades and associated with this Hare Krsna Movement has seen so many come and so many leave. We should never think that this won’t happen to us.
