Why  we are sent to this material world? Iccha-dvesa sammutthena, sarge yanti  parantapa, because we wanted to enjoy life independent of God, or Krsna. This  is the disease. We are not independent. If there is no rain and there is no  food grain, what your independence will do? No. Therefore Krsna says in the  Bhagavad-gita, annad bhavanti bhutani, very practical.
That if you want to be happy, either animal or man, bhutani, then  you
produce anna, food grains sumptuously.
Annad bhavanti bhutani parjanyad anna-sambhavah. And there must be  sufficient rain for producing sufficient food grains. Yajnad bhavanti  parjanyah, and you perform yajna, there will be regular rainfall.  Yajnah-karma samudbhavam.
Who is following thisprinciple? Yajnah-karma  samudbhavam.
Krsna never says that factories,by factories  bhavanti bhutani. Annad bhavanti bhutani, He says this  is practical. We are not interested how to produce anna.  We are now interested how to produce tire tubes. So eat tire  tube…..

Or, you can eat this—
So this is going on. Take Krsna’s instruction as it is. You’ll be happy. This  is Krsna consciousness movement. It is not a bogus thing, it is very  scientific, authorized. Take it very seriously, especially those who are  born Indians. They’ve got the advantage. Don’t be misled. Thank you very  much. So any questions?….
741220SB.BOM                    Lectures                     That means because we have come to this material nature… How we have  come to material nature? That is explained in the Bhagavad-gita, that  iccha-dvesa samutthena sarge yanti parantapa. Iccha-dvesa. There are two  things: hatred and desire. Something we desire and something we hate,  iccha-dvesa. Two kinds of propensities there are. So when we want to enjoy  this material world, that is called iccha, and when we want to disobey God,  that is called dvesa. So that iccha and dvesa, there can be. That is two  opposing elements. There are. So iccha-dvesa samutthena. When we think…  That is not very difficult to understand. Everyone is thinking, “Why shall  I worship God? These are all bogus things, they are going to the temple.  No.” That propensity is there, dvesa. Tan aham dvisatah kruran ksipamy  ajasram asubhan yonisu, Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita. Tan aham dvisatah  kruran. These persons who are envious of God and kruran… Krura means, krura  also, envious, very, very atheistic. Duskrtino mudhah asuram bhavam asritah.  This is asuri-bhava. When we become envious, atheist, godless, without any  God consciousness, that is called atheism. That is dvesa.

So they have increased the working  capability. That is

civilization. Just like in the prisonhouse you have to  work. Eh? So

they think this working is civilization. This is avidya.  So therefore

they have created more work. From early morning, five  o’clock, till

ten o’clock, simply working. They do not know that  “This working is

our punishment.” But because ignorant, they think that  “Working is

life.” This is called ignorance. He does not  know, “This working is my

punishment. How to get out of this  work?” No. To increase the work

more, complicate, that is civilization. This is called  avidya.

Avidya-karma-samjnanya. Our tendency is not to work  but get things.

Therefore he has asked that question. Because he has to  get cloth by

working, therefore he asking, “Why God has not created?” That means

tendency is not to work. That is spiritual  tendency. Everything,

necessities, automatically available. That is our…  Therefore as soon

as one man becomes rich, he does not work. He gets his  thing by

working others. The tendency is there, to retire from  work. They go to

a solitary place. They retire. They do not go out.  Weekly, at least,

they want to stop worker, working. So why this  tendency? He does not

want to die. He does not want to work. This is spiritual.  Why man

should work like… Therefore real civilization is that  minimize work.

Minimize work, save time, and go back to your spiritual  life. That is

civilization.

And this is not civilization, to get the necessities  of

life, sense gratification, and work like hog and dog.  That is

condemned. Nayam deho deha-bhajam nrloke kastan kaman  arhate

vid-bhujam ye. This human life is not meant for working  so hard for

sense gratification which are done by the dogs and hogs.  Human life is

meant: tapo divyam putraka yena sattvam suddhyed. Human  life is for

tapasya. Why tapasya? Yena sattvam suddhyed: their  existence will be

purified. Then you will get unlimited pleasure. Yato  brahma-saukhyam

anantam. We are seeking after unlimited pleasure. So  that is not

possible in this material life. And we are  thinking, “By working very

hard, like hogs and dogs, we will get  happiness.” This is… The dogs

and hogs, they work day and night for searching out where  is stool,

and as soon as he gets stool, he becomes very strong and  stout. Then

sex. Never mind, the mother, sister, daughter. This is  hog life.

not that a brahmana should become  very busy whole day and night for

getting food. So sastra says,  “There is no use of becoming busy for

your food. Food is there  already.” Food is already there. He’ll get

his food. That is arrangement  by God. But they are busy fool. They do

not understand the God’s  arrangement. Only for food they are busy

whole day and night like  cats and dogs.

Now this land is there. You  can… Everyone can grow food if he works

for two months. Everyone  can grow his whole year’s foodstuff. There is so much land. But  no,

they’ll not grow food. They will  grow hammer, manufacturing it. You

see? Tire tube, then atom bomb,  then this and that. They are busy.

They are busy fool. Actually  they are fools, and they are very busy.

Everyone is busy. There  are so many parts in the motorcar, three

thousand part, and they are busy  in manufacturing three thousand parts

of motor parts. So everyone is  busy in producing things unwanted. But

they have created a society in  such a way that they have to do that.

740606BG.GEN                   Lectures

So anyway, the whole world  situation is degrading, that people are

not producing their own food. This is the problem, real  problem.

Ksetra-ksetra-jna. This example  is given. As every man must possess a

piece of land… Therefore  this… Because it is very common thing,

this example has been given.  Ksetra-ksetra-jna.

So as we till our land and gets  foodstuff according to my labor,

according to my intelligence…  Food grains I can produce once twice,

thrice, if I work hard. Generally, they work two times: three months,

three months. And those who  are very lazy, they work three months. But

even working for three months,  they can acquire foodstuffs for the

whole year. That I have  seen….

….What is that economical  progressing? So that means

busy fool. Fool, they do not  know how to satisfy the economic problem

That is recommended in the  Bhagavad-gita, annad bhavanti bhutani: You

grow food grains. Then all  economic question… But why you are not

producing food grains? Why you  are producing iron stools and

instruments and motor and tire  and collecting petrol far away from

Arabia?

Krsna never says that  “You do all this nonsense.”

He said, “Grow food grains.” Why don’t you do that? That  means fools.

After all, you have to eat. So  you are not busy in growing your food,

but you are busy in producing  tire tubes, motor cars, stools and

instruments. Then how you will  get your food? Where is your economic?

First economic is, first  necessity, you must eat.

. In India the, the brahmana  class,

they say, “Oh, I am born in  brahmana family. Why shall I do this

work?” You see. Therefore  the whole society has gone to hell. In your

country still, they accept any  kind of work. It doesn’t matter. And

here, in India, if he happens  to be a brahmana, he’ll not take any

kind of work. Means… Just  like plowing. He’ll not agree. Therefore

so much land. The ksatriya is  thinking, “I am ksatriya.” The brahmana

is thinking, “I am brahmana.”  And the land is lying fallow. There is

no production. He will go to the office and fight with the pen as  a

ksatriya. And instead of studying Vedas, he’ll study the rules  and

regulations given by the office. But he’ll not come to  plow. Therefore

this scarcity of food. He’ll go to a mill to work as ordinary laborer.

SB 4.22.32    There is no stronger obstruction to one’s self-interest  than

thinking other subject matters  to be more pleasing than one’s

self-realization.

SB 4.22.33    For human society,  constantly thinking of how to earn money and

apply it for sense  gratification brings about the destruction of

everyone’s interests. When one  becomes devoid of knowledge and

devotional service, he enters  into species of life like those of trees

and stones.

PURPORT

Human life is especially meant for  self-realization. “Self” refers

to the Superself and the  individual self, the Supreme Personality of

Godhead and the living entity. When, however, one becomes more

interested in the body and  bodily sense gratification, he creates for

himself obstructions on the  path of self-realization. By the influence

of maya, one becomes more  interested in sense gratification, which is

prohibited in this world for  those interested in self-realization.

Instead of becoming interested in  sense gratification, one should

divert his activities to satisfy  the senses of the Supreme Soul.

Anything performed contrary to  this principle is certainly against

one’s self-interest….

.. Therefore activities directed toward  sense gratification are condemned herein.

One who is constantly thinking  of activities to earn money and gratify the senses

is following a path which is  suicidal. Factually all human society is

following this path. Some way or  other, people are determined to earn

money or get money by begging,  borrowing or stealing and applying that

for sense gratification. Such  a civilization is the greatest obstacle

in the path of  self-realization.

——————————————————————————————————————-

Some Conclusions-1. The two reasons we get thrown  into this material world, birth after birth are iccha and dvesa-desire

and hate-which translates as we  wanted to enjoy without Krsna and then be happy with that thinking

2. Prabhupada translates those  two things-desire and hate as why are we not obeying the Lord in the

way He prescribes?  People are growing tire tubes, nuts, bolts cars, computers, etc and

nobody is growing the real  necessity-food grains.

3.Modern civilization means work  hard –and then, work harder–24/7. The solution the Lord and Srila Prabhupada  gives to us is this—work only 2 or 3 months a year, get your food requirements  fulfilled, then chant and do other spiritual things the rest of the year. Makes  sense to me.

4.The Spiritual tendency is NOT  to work, but get things. Nobody wants to die, and nobody really wants

to work-these are spiritual  tendencies. These spiritual cravings can be easily satisfied by simple living ,  high thinking.

5.”They do not understand the  God’s arrangement. Only for food they are busy

whole day and night like cats and  dogs. ”

6.”So anyway, the whole world situation is degrading, that people are not  producing their own food. This is the problem, real problem”….

7.”Krsna never says that “You do all this nonsense.”He said, “Grow food  grains.” Why don’t you do that? That means fools.”

8. “One who is constantly thinking of activities to earn money and gratify  the senses is following a path which is suicidal. Factually all human society is  following this path.. Such a civilization is the greatest obstacle in the path  of self-realization.”

9.Not that everybody will grow his own food-even though that would be a great  start-what Srila Prabhupada is trying to explain to us is this- The  actual Vedic civilization was agrarian or farm based and everything revolved  around that prosperity, which is totally the opposite of what we have today. The  city is the center and the farmers are going out of business, and how long can  this scenario last? Not long. So he is imploring us to all to re think the way  we live as devotees because once one leaves the city life, and owns some land  and grows his own food, this sets up an independence from the rat race unknown  to the devotees at present which translates into so much free time, you wont be  able to believe it. And with this extra free time, we can then spend this human  form of life as it was meant, by Lord Krsna.
