From the Prabhupada Memories…..

Rupa-vilasa: The gurukula building in Vrindavan was under construction and Prabhupada liked to go there every couple of days to see the progress. Once Prabhupada went in the early morning with a contingent of sannyasis and senior devotees and from back of the windows of the building they looked at the workers. Some of the workers were bathing with water that gushed out of a pipe. Some of them were making chapattis over fires and some of them were brushing their teeth with neem twigs. A lot of these workers were Brajabasis and were chanting songs about Krishna. Prabhupada watched this whole scene turned around and said, ‘Just see. They will rise early in the morning. They will work whole day in the hot sun and for what?’ somebody said, “Three rupees.” “For a few rupees”, Prabhupada said, “They will take bath, they will chant some mantra and they will live in the simple way.” He appreciated the simplicity of their life and how sincere and innocent they were. Hansaduta maharaja said, “Prabhupada we should learn to live like this”. Prabhupada laughed and said, “You will never learn. You will never learn.”

Rascal leaders. A little labor in  agriculture willbe  sufficient to produce the family’s food stock for the whole  year. You can stock.  You work only three months, and you get sufficient  foodfor your whole family. And  less nine months, you chant Hare Krsna. Butthese  rascals will not do that. They will work hard like ass  simplyfor eating. Nunam pramattah kurute  vikarma yad indriya-pritaya aprnoti. They will not accept easy  life.

BG 6 11-12 purport-“Sacred place” refers to places of pilgrimage. In India the yogīs, the transcendentalists or the devotees all leave home and reside in sacred places such as Prayāg, Mathurā, Vṛndāvana, Hṛṣīkeśa, and Hardwar and in solitude practice yoga where the sacred rivers like the Yamunā and the Ganges flow. But often this is not possible, especially for Westerners. The so-called yoga societies in big cities may be successful in earning material benefit, but they are not at all suitable for the actual practice of yoga. One who is not self-controlled and whose mind is not undisturbed cannot practice meditation. Therefore, in the Bṛhan-Nāradīya Purāṇa it is said that in the Kali-yuga (the present yuga or age) when people in general are short-lived, slow in spiritual realization and always disturbed by various anxieties, the best means of spiritual realization is chanting the holy name of the Lord.
harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam
kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva nāsty eva gatir anyathā.

“In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy the only means of deliverance is chanting the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.”

But if you can do it, living in the country, growing your own food and learning how to depend upon Mother Nature instead of the grocery stores, we will be so much better off. Less anxiety, live longer, have better health and actually try to do what Srila Prabhupada describes what we will never learn….

July 7 1968 letter-My Dear Dayananda,
Please accept my blessings, and offer the same to Srimati Nandarani, and to your daughter. I hope you are all well in Krishna Consciousness. And I am so glad to learn that Krishna is endowing you with more and more intelligence in the matter of understanding Krishna Consciousness. Krishna is very kind and any sincere devotee is always taken care of by His Lordship in all respects. Please regularly chant Hare Krishna, read Srimad-Bhagavatam, and very soon you will get other books also, like Bhagavad-gita As It Is, Teachings of Lord Caitanya, and always read and talk about Krishna between yourselves, and always remember that this life is but a flash only. We have to seek after our eternal life in Krishna Consciousness and be transferred to the spiritual world in the association of Krishna. Continue to keep your present attitude and certainly even within this life, you will be successful in attaining perfection of Krishna Consciousness.
