Hare Krsna-Below we have some photos of corn in its various stages before my wife grinds it into finer and finer flour for making into various corn breads, sweets, cake crusts and other preps. It is a very useful and delicious grain which I love to eat fresh for about a month and a half every evening meal in the summertime.
Here is what Srila Prabhupada says about corn…..
Oct 9 1977
Prabhupāda: From corn you can make two things: ruṭi and bhāta.
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Hm. From corn you can make two things: ruṭi, cāpāṭis, and bhāta, or like rice.
Prabhupāda: The villagers will like it very much. You smash it by that ḍheṅki. You know that machine?
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: The ladies jump on it.
Prabhupāda: Yes. So as much as it is powdered, make it ruṭi, and the hard portion make rice. The kṛṣāṇas will like, and it is very nutritious.

You will be surprised. When I was family man, I had a servant who was only twenty-two years old. Oh, he was too stout and strong. You see? So one day I asked him that… His name was Buddhu. So I asked him, “Buddhu, what do you take that you are very stout and strong?” He said, “My dear sir, I take only these corns.” Corns. You know corns? A corns and it is powdered. The powdered portions used to make bread, and the grain portion he used to cook as rice, and he was taking that. That’s all.
Green: Cornmeal?
Prabhupāda: Corn.
Devotees: Meal. Cornmeal.
Prabhupāda: Cornmeal, yes. And he was very stout and strong. He was deriving all the vitamins. Because he was poor man, he could not eat any butter or milk or any other things, meat also no, nothing of the sort. He was simply eating… He was drawing, at that time, only twenty-two rupees from me. Twenty-two rupees means… According to your American exchange, it comes to five dollars, five dollars a month, his income. And what he could spend? So he was taking the cheap food. But he was very strong and stout. So whole idea is that these grains, these grains are meant for human being. Coarse grain or fine grain, there are so many varieties of grain, varieties of rice, varieties of dāl, according… Now, the fine rice, the basmati rice… The laborer class… In India, of course, we have got this distinction. They are not satisfied for, with this white rice. They want coarse grain for satisfaction. While gentleman class, they cannot eat coarse grain. They want finer grain. So all these varieties of grains and vegetables and everything is there by nature’s arrangement, by God’s arrangement.
End result– Corn bread for Krsna
If we dont spend our money on Krsna, then we will spend it on the dog—SP
(Srila Prabhupada Lecture, Vrindavan, October 31, 1976)
“In Western countries they accumulate millions of dollars, and at the last moment he gives to his dog. (laughter) There are many instances, you know better than me. He has no…, nobody even, because they do not marry—no children, no friend—so the dog is the best friend in Western country. Every gentleman must have this best friend, pet dog. So ultimately, because there is nobody to give, he gives it to the dog, makes a will that ‘My dog will get it, and they’ll give him jewelry, ornaments and so on, so on, so on.’ We have got practical experience, the big palace which we have purchased in Detroit, the man did not marry, so ultimately he bequeathed the whole estate to the dog. (laughter) And there is a tomb of the dog. (laughter)
(SP is here referring to the Fisher Mansion in Detroit)
So one has to do it. If he does not do it for God, then he will have to do it ultimately to the dog. So better, so long you have got money, spend it for God. San-nimitte varaṁ tyāgo vināśe niyate sati (Cāṇakya-śloka 36). This is the instruction of Cāṇakya Paṇḍita, that whatever money you have got, it will be spent. You cannot keep it. Either the money will go from you, or you have to go from the money. You cannot keep together. That is not possible. If you don’t spend the money for Kṛṣṇa, if you keep it, that ‘I shall see it. I shall lick up this money and be happy…’ Kṛpaṇa, that those who are miser, they do not spend money for Kṛṣṇa but they see the money. Therefore it has become a problem for us, how to spend the money. How to spend the money for Kṛṣṇa, that is our policy. We do not want to keep money. We cannot keep; that is not possible. Somebody will take it. Ultimately the government will take away. Better spend it for Kṛṣṇa. Spend it for Kṛṣṇa; that is the right use. San-nimitte varaṁ tyāgo vināśe niya… Cāṇakya Paṇḍita, he was great politician, he is advising that if you have got money, spend it for Kṛṣṇa. Don’t keep it. Spend it for Kṛṣṇa. Why? It will be spoiled. Today or tomorrow it will be spoiled. Somebody will take and spoil it. Better if you spend it for Kṛṣṇa; at least your service will be recognized. Kṛṣṇa will see that ‘This man is spending his hard-earned money for Me.’ “
