Hare Krsna

Below are some interesting  facts about Omens and what they mean to one who is conscious of their presence.

KB 1-37 / Akrura’s Arrival in Vrndavana :

“That Supreme Personality of Godhead has now come just like an ordinary human being, and it is my great fortune to be able to see Him face to face,” Akrūra thought. He was thrilled with expectations of seeing the very lotus feet which are worshiped by great demigods like Brahmā, Nārada, and Lord Śiva, which traverse the ground of Vṛndāvana, and which touch the breasts of the gopīs covered with tinges of kuṅkuma. He thought, “I am so fortunate that I will be able to see those very lotus feet on this day, and certainly I shall be able to see the beautiful face of Kṛṣṇa, which is marked on the forehead and the nose with tilaka. And I shall also see His smile and His curling black hair. I can be sure of this opportunity because I see that today the deer are passing on my right side.

KB 1-52 / Krsna Kidnaps Rukmini :

Even though she pacified herself by thinking that the time for Govinda to arrive had not yet expired, Rukmiṇī felt that she was hoping against hope. She began to shed tears, and when they became more forceful, she closed her eyes in helplessness. While Rukmiṇī was in such deep thought, auspicious symptoms appeared in different parts of her body. Trembling began to occur in her left eyelid and in her arms and thighs. When trembling occurs in these parts of the body it is an auspicious sign indicating that something lucrative can be expected.

KB 1-44 / Krsna Recovers the Son of His Teacher :

Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma learned how to speak and understand the languages of various countries. They learned not only the languages of human beings. Kṛṣṇa could also speak even with animals and birds. Evidence of this is found in Vaiṣṇava literature compiled by the Gosvāmīs. Then They learned how to make carriages and airplanes from flowers. It is said in the Ramāyāṇa that after defeating Rāvaṇa, Rāmacandra was carried from Laṅkā to Bhāratavarṣa on a plane of flowers called puṣpa-ratha. Kṛṣṇa then learned the art of foretelling events by seeing signs. In a book called Khanār vacana, the various types of signs and omens are described. If, when one is going out, one sees someone with a bucket full of water, that is a very good sign. But if one sees someone with an empty bucket, it is not a very good sign. Similarly, if one sees cow’s milk along with a calf, it is a good sign. The result of understanding these signs is that one can foretell events, and Kṛṣṇa learned the science.

Directions of the Universe : SB 3.17.15 : PURPORT :

We can learn from the description of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam that it is because of the birth of two great demons that there were so many natural disturbances. It is to be indirectly understood, as previously described, that when there are constant disturbances on the earth, that is an omen that some demoniac people have been born or that the demoniac population has increased

SB 9.20.20

When the King refused to accept his wife and son, who were both irreproachable, an unembodied voice spoke from the sky as an omen and was heard by everyone present.

PURPORT-Maharaja Dushmanta knew that Śakuntalā and the boy were his own wife and son, but because they came from outside and were unknown to the citizens, he at first declined to accept them. Śakuntalā, however, was so chaste that an omen from the sky declared the truth so that others could hear. When everyone heard from the omen that Śakuntalā and her child were truly the King’s wife and son, the King gladly accepted them.
KB 1-1 / Advent of Lord Krsna :

While the bride and bridegroom were passing along on the chariot, there were different kinds of musical instruments playing to indicate the auspicious moment. There were conchshells, bugles, drums and kettledrums; combined together, they were vibrating a nice concert. The procession was passing very pleasingly, and Kaṁsa was driving the chariot, when suddenly there was a miraculous sound vibrated from the sky which especially announced to Kaṁsa: “Kaṁsa: you are such a fool. You are driving the chariot of your sister and your brother-in-law, but you do not know that the eighth child of this sister will kill you.”

Letters : Mangalaniloy Brahmacari — New York 16 May, 1966 : 66-05-16 :

Your strong desire to come to western countries is very laudable because . I tried first Kesava Maharaja, then Bon Maharaja and then Tirtha Maharaja but I have failed to get any cooperation from either of them till now and therefore when I was just arranging to go back to India to try for myself it is a great omen to receive your encouraging letter under reply. I know you well and I think once we met at Vrindaban some 8 to 9 years before and I took Prasadam in your then Matha behind the Ranganatha Temple.

1968 68-09-15  My Dear Sivananda,

Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated Sept. 10, 1968, just after posting my reply to your letter dated Sept. 9. The coincidence that as soon as you received my letter for opening the Berlin center immediately, Krishna has sent you immediately a check for 200 American dollars—this is a good omen that we should immediately open our branch in Berlin.

SB 1.14.12

Just see, O Bhima, how the she jackal cries at the rising sun and vomits fire, and how the dog barks at me fearlessly. PURPORT–These are some bad omens indicating something undesirable in the near future.

Krsna book -subduing Kaliya
… Kaliya felt great anger within his heart, and thus he grabbed Krsna with his mighty coils. Seeing the incredible way in which Krsna was enveloped in the coils of the serpent, the affectionate cowherd boys and inhabitants of Vrndavana immediately became stunned out of fear. .. All the cows, bulls and small calves became overwhelmed with grief, and they began to look at Him with great anxiety. Out of fear they could only cry in agony and stand erect on the bank, unable to help their beloved Krsna. While this scene was taking place on the bank of the Yamuna, there were ill omens manifest. The earth trembled, meteors fell from the sky, and the bodies of men shivered. All these are indications of great immediate danger.

In all the above statements, It is found that both good and bad omens occur in nature on occasion. What is this for?   Why even pay attention to this? When in school, it is always a better outcome after taking a test, if we have prepared ourself, and paid attention to what is going on around us. Being Krsna Conscious means being conscious of Krsna, who is Everything.

TLK Vs 21 : PURPORT :

Human life is meant for yajña, sacrifice for the satisfaction of the Supreme Person. We may perfect our activities, but our success lies in satisfying Kṛṣṇa by our talents. Presently we may be attached to material activity, but we should transfer that attachment to a sādhu. Then our lives will be successful. Presently we are attached to money, women, nice houses, country, society, friends, family and so forth. This attachment is called arjanaṁ pāśu. The word pāśu means “rope.” When we are bound with a rope, we are helpless, and now we are bound by the guṇas, or the three modes of material nature. The word guṇa also means “rope.” We cannot free ourselves, for we are conditioned. We cannot move freely without the sanction of the supreme authority. It is generally said that not a blade of grass moves without God’s sanction. Similarly, we cannot do anything without the supervision of a superior authority.

740524r2.rom : Prabhupāda: You cannot eat anything, even grass, without the sanction of God, what to speak of fish and others. You cannot eat even a piece of grass. Īśāvāsyam idaṁ sarvaṁ yat kiñca jagatyāṁ jagat, tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā [Īśo mantra 1]. Everything belongs to God. You can simply enjoy after being sanctioned by God. Otherwise not. This is real philosophy. Everything belongs… Just like in this room, it is supposed that everything belongs to me. Even my students, they ask, “May I take this?” They have got right to take, but still, they ask. Similarly, you cannot touch anything—everything belongs to God—without His sanction. This is God consciousness.

Krsna tells us in Bhagavad Gita 3.27-
“The bewildered spirit soul, under the influence of the three modes of material nature, thinks himself to be the doer of activities, which are in actuality carried out by nature”

Also In the Bhagavad Gita  9.10 ,Krsna tells us–This material nature is working under My direction, O son of Kuntī, and it is producing all moving and unmoving beings. By its rule this manifestation is created and annihilated again and again.

Srila Prabhupada himself, I am told, did not prefer to travel on Thursdays, and if he did, the bags would be packed and put outside his door on Wednesday. A pure devotee is not under the control of the material energy, yet out of respect for the demigods, and Krsna’s supreme arrangements, would  honor this  universal law.

Some Conclusions:
From the above selection of quotes we can understand a little, how this thing we call “life”, is obviously very
intricately arranged by the Supreme Controller. Srila Prabhupada in one place mentions we should be able to sense an “arrangement” behind everything because nothing happens by chance or accident-a word not even found in the sanskrit dictionary. Once Sir Issac Newton, the famous physicist made a mock up model of the universe which was impressive and an atheist friend of his came to see it, and asked him- who made this? Newton replied-nobody-it  just  happened by chance ! The friend insisted somebody had to make it. Newton, said no, it was just chance that all those materials came together-not a person at all. Finally Newton said, to his exasperated friend, if you can accept that this small insignificant universal model HAD to be made by a person, then why cant you accept that this larger universe was made similarly by a person??  Typical Newtonian logic.

Just by carefully observing things happening in nature, which is so ordered, we can see somewhat, a superior hand or controller behind life. When we say power, there must always be someone who is powerful, or who controls that power. Energy means there must be someone who is Energetic.Electricity comes to us thru millions of wires, but there is a man or person behind it all who throws the switch. Omens are meant to help us see the future, “good” or “bad” and also by seeing these omens we can also see that nothing can take place without some superior arrangement, by some superior “power”. We are but a very tiny part of the cosmos, playing out our own tiny part and interacting continually with so many other tiny “parts”. And all this interaction taken together is called “life”, of which we understand very little of how things are going on.  Srila Prabhupada also explains how the demigods are controlling everything-even our eyelids which blink.  Everyone to some degree is a controller- a man is controlled by his wife, or the wife is controlled by her husband, the children controlled by the parents, citizens controlled by the state government, and ultimately when we go further and further as to who is the greatest of controllers, we will find that one person who is not controlled by anyone-that is God, Krsna.
So by observing omens, and knowing that nothing happens without the sanction of the Supreme Controller, Krsna, this leads us to becoming  eventually, God Conscious, or Krsna Conscious and finally properly concluding we should act under His control. Acting under this control, means we regain our original constitutional position of eternality, full consciousness or knowledge, and Ananda-blissfullness.
