The revised and enlarged edition of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is (BGAII), as published by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT) 1983, disregards the academic community’s protocols or standards governing the revised editions of the books. According to the guidelines now widely accepted and practiced by publishers and academicians, the names of editors and co-authors of such newly revised editions are to be included along with dates. This distinguishes such a 2nd edition from a publication which is only a second printing of an author’s original first edition.

A controversy was created because Srila Prabhupada, the author, was not present to consult with or personally authorize a re-edit of the book, which was first published as an unabridged, “complete edition” in 1972 by the Macmillan Company. From 1972 until 1977, the year Srila Prabhupada passed away, the book had been constantly studied by his disciples, widely distributed to the public and often favorably reviewed. During this time there were no proposals from anyone, nor an explicit authorization from Srila Prabhupada to revise the book then or in the future. Continue reading →

ISKCON computer calendar dates BIG MESS versus THE PANJIKA : AS AUTHORISED BY SRILA PRABHUPADA‏

**newrule

The situation today in ISKCON calendar is Ekadasi dates are not followed as it was back when Srila Prabhupada’s time from 1966-1977. Ekadasidates are supposed to be THE SAME in ANY time zone and Panjika was to be followed AS OBSERVED IN MAYAPUR. The new calendar has created Ekadasis to be followed by dates and times in different countries thus this has created a BIG MESS.
Please read below. Any comments/discussion welcome.
53. That the GBC accepts the Yoga Pitha Gaudiya Panjika calendar as authoritative for ISKCON on the instructions of Srila Prabhupada. It is also Srila Prabhupada’s instructions that the Panjika be followed in any time zone of the world according to the same Calendar date as observed in Mayapur. Bhakti Caru Swami shall secure and certify an official translation. [Provisional Order]
(GBC Resolutions February 25, 1988)
“on the instructions of Srila Prabhupada”
EKADASI
SB 4.28.35-36 We can definitely see that to advance in Krsna consciousness one must control his bodily weight. If one becomes too fat, it is to be assumed that he is not advancing spiritually. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura severely criticized his fat disciples. The idea is that one who intends to advance in Krsna consciousness must not eat very much. Devotees used to go to forests, high hills or mountains on pilgrimages, but such severe austerities are not possible in these days. One should instead eat only prasada and no more than required. ACCORDING TO THE VAISNAVA CALENDAR, THERE ARE MANY FASTS, SUCH AS EKADASI AND THE APPEARANCE AND DISAPPEARANCE DAYS OF GOD AND HIS DEVOTEES. ALL OF THESE ARE MEANT TO DECREASE THE FAT WITHIN THE BODY SO THAT ONE WILL NOT SLEEP MORE THAN DESIRED AND WILL NOT BECOME INACTIVE AND LAZY. Overindulgence in food will cause a man to sleep more than required. This human form of life is meant for austerity, and austerity means controlling sex, food intake, etc. In this way time can be saved for spiritual activity, and one can purify himself both externally and internally. Thus both body and mind can be cleansed. Continue reading →

Interesting article from IRM re: Abandonment of Srila Prabhupada’s key teachings‏

**newrule

Back To Prabhupada, Issue 30, Winter 2010/11

ISKCON’s rejection of Srila Prabhupada as the movement’s guru has been accompanied by a wholesale abandonment of his key teachings in every other major area of operation as well. As we document below, ISKCON today has evolved into a brand new movement, barely recognisable from the movement founded by Srila Prabhupada.
God
The Krishna consciousness movement, by definition, involves exclusive worship and focus on God, Krishna. Srila Prabhupada states:
“this Krsna consciousness movement simply advocates worship of Krsna to the exclusion of the demigods.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam, 4.31.14 purport)
However, as documented in detail in previous BTP issues, ISKCON temples are no longer the preserve for the exclusive worship of Krishna, with the worship of demigods now occurring alongside the worship of Krishna. This is admitted by ISKCON’s leadership:
“Temples once the exclusive hold of Gaura-Nitai and Radha- Krishna now are dominated by murtis* of demigods.” (HH Jayadvaita Swami, ISKCON Studies Conference, Italy, 28/7/2007) * sacred statues
Deity worship
Even when Krishna is worshipped in ISKCON temples, non-authorised methods have been introduced to accommodate popular culture:
“I covered the altar with fluffy white cloth that looked like snow, and made a big snowman wearing a harinama chaddar, offering incense and ringing a bell,” she says. “I even had devotees make a big reindeer pulling a sleigh, which was set up on the altar so that it looked like Radha-Govinda were on it.” (ISKCON News, 26/12/2009, report on ISKCON Ireland) Continue reading →

Taking drugs/intoxication is a sign of madness–SP‏

**newrule

Hare Krsna to all
Pranams
All glories to Srila Prabhupada
I read this last night before falling asleep. Prabhupada clearly explains  why
people take to intoxication. Many times people will say, taking drugs  is
spiritual-below he explains why this is total madness.
We all have had to deal with these crazy type of people who mistake
intoxication for spirituality.
They will say–“Oh it says right there in Bhagavad gita-Krsna says
“I am the healing herb”……
Prabhupada explains it all-very clearly– for those who can “hear”.
Hare Krsna,
Damaghosa das

750508rc.per                 Conversations                 379856/530501 Kim: One more question. What do you think of the use of  drugs as an aid? Prabhupada: Drugs? That is another  side of madness. Just like, human being, after the evolution of  8 million forms of bodies, he comes to human body to understand philosophy,  these Vedas. So instead of utilizing life for that purpose, he wants to  become again like the cats and dogs, and therefore he takes drugs. He is  already cat and dog. He’s no better than cats and dogs, because he has no  interest in this knowledge. He was meant for this knowledge but he  remains like cats and dogs, therefore he is not satisfied,  therefore he takes drugs to forget himself. This is the philosophy of  drugs. He was meant for becoming satisfied by taking this  knowledge. He does not get the chance. Nobody leads him to this  knowledge. He remains like cats and dogs, but as a human being if he  lives like cats and dogs, he’ll never be happy. Because there is no  happiness, therefore he takes drugs, to forget. This is the drug philosophy.  Drug philosophy means to forget one’s present suffering. He must  suffer, because his consciousness is developed. He must take this Vedic  knowledge, but he does not take. Therefore he is dissatisfied, and to  counteract the dissatisfaction he takes drugs. This is drug  philosophy. Continue reading →

Apparent contradictions in the books ??

Hare Krsna to all

Pranams

All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Below we have two separate quotes about who is  liberated.

The first one says if we are even slightly  interested in Krsna katha, that means

we are liberated. The second one gives a lot more  information.

But the interesting thing is that if one just reads the  first one and nothing more

then he will think I  am liberated and dont have  to do anything more because I am “slightly interested”

in Krsna-therefore I am liberated. This is how one can  read the books and screw

out any meaning he wants-this is called sahajiya  mentality or prakrta bhakta.

Having a little knowledge is dangerous. We must become  fully aware of the

spiritual science of God Consciousness, Krsna  Consciousness.

Why we have no interest for God-Srila Bhaktisiddhanta maharaj‏

**newrule

“No Interest”

Question: Why are we not inclined toward the Lord’s  service?
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Prabhupada:
We have no inclination toward God and no inclination to remedy that  situation. Therefore we need an expert doctor. Our inclination toward  the Lord will arise if we associate with devotees. Just as a  veterinary surgeon tactfully places medicine in an animal’s mouth,  similarly the spiritual master and the devotees, who are just like expert  doctors, bestow mercy on us. Despite our reluctance they forcibly pour  the mellows of devotional service into our mouths.

3 types of Japa-from Hari bhakti vilasa‏

Three Types of Japa Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, 17.155 –  158

[It is described in the Nṛsiṁha Purāṇa:] There are three types of  japa-yajña. Listen to their respective names and qualities.
The three types are vācika-japa, upāṁśu-japa and mānasa-japa.  Among these three, each is superior to the one before it.
Vācika-japa is chanting which is characterized by  high and low pitches along with clear pronunciation and audible utterance.
Upāṁśu-japa is that in which the lips move slightly and  the mantra is spoken softly in such a way that it is audible only to oneself.
Mānasa-japa is that in which the chanter mentally connects  the syllables of the mantra to form a word and then mentally connects the  words to form the mantra, thereafter meditating on the meaning of the  mantra. Note: “Japa” in such contexts generally refers to recitation of  gāyatrī-mantra and similar texts. The high and low pitches specified in this  verse indicate japa of Vedic mantras and specifically gāyatrī.” Reciting  prayers in pūjā is called stuti or stavana. — Translated by Hari Parshad Das  from Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsaḥ with Bengali Translation, Bangabda 1318  (Corresponding to 1911 A.D.), edited by Shri Shyamacharan Kaviratn

In Srila Bhaktivinode Thakurs book called Jaiva Dharma. Pg. 384 Chapter 24  translated by Sarva bhavana das…there is the following text….its a  question-answer section between two great souls.
Vijaya, Gurudeva, I now understand that  the  mayavadis, karmis jnanis and yogis in general are all namaparadhis. Should a  suddha bhakta participate in harinama sankirtan with them?
Raghunatha das babaji-“Vaisnavas are advised not to  join an assembly of chanters that comprises a majority of  namaparadhis, and also if the lead singer is a  namaparadhi .
However in a kirtana group consisting mainly of suddha bhaktas and bhaktas  upon the platform of namabhasa  there is all good reason to participate.  And such participation will bring great satisfaction and spiritual  bliss.
And here is what Srila Prabhupada says on  this same idea…….

Glories to Srila  Prabhupada

This email is a  followup to yesterdays-where I showed pictures of the Make Vrndavana Book set (approx 1,500 pages) , and  which gave, at the end of  that email, Srila Prabhupadas final instructions to his disciples  and followers.

What follows is a  short list of quotes from the conversations books related to becomming self  independent, and start doing this by growing ones own food. Also mentioned is  Prabhupada stressing adopting the principle of simple living and high  thinking along that way.

Hari  bol

►740524r2.rom                Conversations …  Yes, naturally. If this man is fed up with  this industry, he can go back to village and  produce his own food. But he is attached to this industrial  activity because he is thinking that “We are getting more money for wine and  woman and meat. Let me enjoy.” That is the perfect, imp…  But  if he chants Hare Krsna maha-mantra, his consciousness  will be purified and he will be made not interested this kind of work. He will go back to village  and produce food.

►740525mw.rom                Conversations …  That is yajna. So in the Kali-yuga the yajna is made  very easy. Chant Hare Krsna. So anywhere you go, chant Hare Krsna, and see  that there will be clouds, there will be rainfall, and just work  little, you get your foodgrains, and chant Hare  Krsna.

Tampering with Prabhupada’s personally typewritten sanskrit translations

**newrule

By Ajit Krishna Dasa and Bhaktin Anna Nygaard

In regard to the posthumous editing of Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gita As It Is, Jayadvaita Swami has expressed (emphasis added by Arsa-Prayoga staff):

1982:

“Comparing each verse in the book with the text of the manuscript, I made only those changes that to me seemed worthwhile. I tried to be conservative and not make needless changes.” (Jayadvaita Swami, letter to senior devotees, October 25, 1982)

1986:

“As you know, and as we kept in mind while doing the work, Srila Prabhupada staunchly opposed needless changes.” (Jayadvaita Swami, Letter to Amogha Lila, 1986)

1995:

“When Srila Prabhupada conveyed to us the conclusions of the previous acaryas, he did so perfectly, preserving and transmitting the philosophy exactly as it is, neither watering anything down, nor covering anything over, nor leaving anything out. He gave us the essence of everything.

We therefore don’t need to add anything, subtract anything, or change anything. We need only faithfully serve Srila Prabhupada’s orders, and everything will be revealed.” (Jayadvaita Swami, Sri Vyasa Puja book August 19,1995)

2009:

On BBT International’s website we find this video:

Transcription of the video:

“Arsa-Prayoga is a very important principle. The editor should never have the mentality that he’s better than the author, that he has something more to contribute than the author does, that the author really doesn’t know what he is doing, but he knows what he is doing. That’s offensive! And that is…ruins everything! It is an offense to the acarya. The idea, however, that this sort of sanctity that the author’s text has, or that the words of the author have, somehow extends to the mistakes of the editors…is weird! “It’s an offense to correct the mistakes of previous editors!” Are they acaryas? Are they paramahamsas? Are they infallible? They are wonderful devotees, they did wonderful service. But they made mistakes. Understandably.”

Summing up Jayadvaita Maharaja’s standpoints from the above:

In 2009 Jayadvaita Swami admits that the principle of arsa-prayoga is very important, and that it is an offense to violate it. He admits that Prabhupada’s text has sanctity, and that the editors of Prabhupada books should never think they are better than Prabhupada and has more to contribute than Prabhupada.

In 1995, twelve years after Prabhupada’s disappearance, Jayadvaita Swami said that we should not add, subtract or change anything in the teachings Prabhupada has given us. Earlier, in 1982 and 1986, Jayadvaita Swami claimed that they had in mind not to make needless changes in their editing of Bhagavad-gita As It is, because Prabhupada staunchly opposed such needless changes. They only changed what they felt was worthwhile changing. However, Jayadvaita Swami further states that the sanctity that Prabhupada’s texts have do not apply the the work done by Prabhupada’s editors (he seem not to appreciate the fact that this work was later approved by Prabhupada. Does Prabhupada’s approval not have sanctity?)

In this way Jayadvaita Swami makes it seem as if he did not add, subtract or change any of Prabhupada’s direct words (except for the grammatical errors, capitalisation and commas). However, during the last three decades, we and many other devotees have, observed and documented numerous needless changes to Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gita As It Is made by Jayadvaita Swami. And in spite of Jayadvaita Swami’s own seeming interest in not adding, subtracting or changing anything in Srila Prabhupada’s teachings, the posthumously edited books contain all of these three types of edits (adding, subtracting and changing).

We will now start a series of articles documenting the changes made to the sanskrit synonyms (word for word meanings) in the first six chapters of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is. Why only the first six chapter?

According to Jayadvaita Swami the first five or six chapters of the draft (often referred to as the ”original manuscript”) to the Bhagavad-gita As It Is was personally typewritten by Srila Prabhupada himself.

Jayadvaita Swami writes on his website:

”Some books Srila Prabhupada wrote out in longhand or typed himself. These include Easy Journey to Other Planets, Sri Isopanishad, the first and second cantos of Srimad-Bhagavatam, the first five or six chapters of Bhagavad-gita As It Is,…” (Jayadvaita Swami, Editing the Unchangeable Truth, How Were the Books Written?, Reprinted from ISKCON Communications Journal, Volume 11, 2005)

If anything has santity, apart from the finished manuscripts that Prabhupada sent to the press for printing, it must be the words that he himself wrote on his type-writer. We would most certainly not expect to see any changes made to these. Even if they contain mistakes, these mistakes should not be corrected according to the principle of arsa-prayoga. However, we do see significant changes made to the sanskrit translations that Prabhupada personally wrote on his type-writer. By comparing the posthumously edited 1983 edition with both the 1972 MacMillan edition and the so called “original manuscript” we see that the 1972 MacMillan edition is much closer to faithful to Prabhupada’s original words.

We now publish for the first time a complete list over all the changes made to Prabhupada’s personally type-written sanskrit translations. Here is the complete list for Chapter One.
