So we are advancing in science, but at the same time, the so-called science, at the same time we are creating many disadvantages. Many disadvantages. From practical experience I say that when I came to your country… In India it is very difficult to get a telephone. You have to wait in the waiting list at least for two years or you have to bribe the authorities, say, five thousand, two thousand, like that. So when I got this facility of telephone… Because as soon as I deposited forty dollars… Forty dollars? The next day the telephone was in my room. So I was very glad. But after getting my telephone, I was disturbed always. (laughter) Some of my students asking, phoning me, (telephone sound) cling, cling, and “Swamiji, how you are feeling?” At twelve o’clock at night. (laughter). Yes. So I asked him, it is the time to inquire? I am very sorry. Not only one, I become so much disturbed. Then I asked them, get out this telephone. Yes.
So try to understand. The so-called facility of the modern science means creating so many difficulties also.
Some conclusions–
There are so many things that the “experts” or others say we “need” or need to do. I remember when I was in high school, I went to an eye doctor who told me I needed to wear glasses, but he also told me that when I started wearing them my eyes would get weaker, and the glasses prescription would have to get stronger. So I thought , why should I do this and become dependent upon these eyeglasses? So I never wore them and even up to today, I don’t need to wear glasses. I do have them but only for driving at night, which I hardly ever do.
So I did not listen to his “advice” and am better off for it.

Below we have a few statements by our spiritual master who is telling us all that to keep long hairs and beard means we are no longer his disciple. This physical presentation by someone comes from being lazy/casual in his spiritual life and not thinking these “small things” to be important any more. Well they are important, otherwise Srila Prabhupada would not have mentioned them and proves them also by the statements of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. To become casual means we will become a casualty. Gone.…..where did so and so ever… go??

So simply full of faults. Social life, political life, religious life—everything has been described there. And one thing I can see very practical, that in this age, lāvaṇyaṁ keśa-dhāraṇam. It is stated there that people will think that by keeping long hairs they will become very beautiful. That is stated there. Dāmpatye ratim eva hi. Husband and wife’s relation will depend on the strength of sex. These are described there. Svīkāra eva codvāhe. Marriage will be performed simply by agreement.

But as soon as I came to your country I saw the hippies-big, big hair. Keśa-dhāraṇam. Keśa means hair. It is predicted. Just see. This is śāstra: “In the Kali-yuga people will think very, think themselves of very beautiful feature by keeping long hairs.” That is stated. This is called śāstra. Five thousand years ago Bhāgavata was written, and there the symptoms of Kali-yuga are mentioned, and this is one of the symptoms, lāvaṇyaṁ keśa-dhāraṇam.

I was just reading the following few pages today in the Make Vrndavana booklet comprised entirely of conversations with Srila Prabhupada. The below four quotes are only within a few pages of this book. There is so much information in Prabhupadas statements. These are about guru tattva… Please read ….

So in the above statement by Srila Prabhupada we hear him saying he was with or heard his guru maharaj not more than ten times, maybe less than ten times..
So how was Srila Prabhupada getting instructions (DAILY) from his guru? Over a span of many years (he met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaj around 1920, and he passed away in 1935. So over the course of 15 years he was with him less than 10 times. So if you want to average it out, to less than once a year assuming ten meetings of the two personalities. So in those few short times, he got some instructions, the main one we know was “if you get money print books”, and the other one was “preach to the english speaking people of the world, it will do good to you and them”. And I am sure there were a few more..
So my point here is this: How was Srila Prabhupada getting daily instruction, guidance, inspiration, etc from a guru he only met less than once a year?? Could you even run a mundane family/business/temple on one instruction a year? No of course not. It takes thousands…
And the instructions Prabhupada told us he got were mainly only the above two? Hardly much information for starting a world wide organization one would think? Where did all the extreme details about Krsna Consciousness come from that you will find in Srila Prabhupadas books ?? Did he just pull these out of the air? Concoct them?
And what about getting guidance AFTER Bhaktisiddhanta maharaj left his body?This is when he wrote his books.

Everyone knows, Prabhupadas books and purports are his “devotional ecstasies” and they came from Lord Krsna thru the mercy of his guru maharaj Bhaktisiddhanta Maharj-WHOM HE ONLY MET LESS THAN ONCE A YEAR.
So this whole idea of needing a “LIVING GURU” is rubbish.
What is “living” is not the physcial body
but the spiritual/vani/instructions which comes thru that body.

Prabhupāda: They are directing. Just like in the jail there are different departmental management, similarly, this management is required because you are in the jail. If you don’t go to jail, the management may be closed. But you are thinking, “If I do not go to jail, how it will exist?” That is your business, say that “If we all become liberated, how this world will go on?” They say like that, as if it is very necessary.

My Dear Mr. Levine,
Please accept my blessings. I am so pleased to read your letter of January 21, 1969 and to learn of your sincere eagerness to serve Krishna in the best capacity of your talents. There is a Sanskrit proverb that says that there is not any better knowledge than to become a musician. Our Krishna Consciousness movement is practically based upon music and dancing. If by your exceptional qualities you can help in this movement, I think you have been sent by Krishna Himself to help me in this connection.
How to overcome all the bad effects of this degraded age
How to overcome all the nasty conditions of this Kali yuga-
SB 1.1.10
prāyeṇālpāyuṣaḥ sabhya
kalāv asmin yuge janāḥ
mandāḥ sumanda-matayo
manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ
“O learned one, in this iron age of Kali men have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed.”
The people in this age are very short-lived and slow in understanding spiritual life.
Hare Krsna-The above verse is a short summary of conditions and mankind himself in this present age of Kali. Even though we are all fool number one, still we all think we know something of everything. Especially when it comes to spiritual life. Therefore Krsna, has sent us His pure devotee Srila Prabhupada who is giving us the short cut but concise and effective path in this degraded age of how to go back to home back to Godhead.
The five purports below give us a summary of how fallen we are.

Their first qualification is their life is very short, short span of life. Then the next, mandāḥ, lazy. They do not know, ill-educated. They do not know what is the aim of life. Mandāḥ or slow. Sumanda-matayo, and if one is really, not really, but superficially so-called spiritually they will capture some baba, some god, some yogi, some bluffer, and they will follow them. Sumanda-matayo. So many religious sects have come out but originally there is this Vedic religion. But after that, so many religions they have come, so they have got history. I know this Christian religion, Mohammedan religion, Buddhist religion, Jain religion, this religion, that religion, this ism, that ism, they are all history. History. It is limited, within the limit of time. But this Vedic religion has no beginning or end. Therefore, Sumanda-matayo, they will theorize, “In our religion it is said this.” “Oh, whatever your religion may be, but the real purpose of religion is to understand God. How far you have understood God?” That is practically nil. But the formulas and dogmas and this and that they’re full of. Sumanda-matayo. Mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā [SB 1.1.10]. And almost everyone is unfortunate. They haven’t got even means to accommodate the bare necessities of life—eating, sleeping, mating. They’re also deficient. mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ. And above all these there is always disturbance. Sometimes war, sometimes famine, sometimes earthquake, sometimes this, overflood… Now in this condition of life how you can take up very serious type of self-realization, that is not possible.
