Srila Prabhupada on the power of Srimad-Bhagavatam

Submitted by Yasoda nandana Dasa

  • There is no comparison. There is no literature throughout the universe like Srimad-Bhagavatam. There is no competition.  Every word is for the good of the human society. Therefore we stress so much in the book distribution. Somehow or other, if the book goes in one hand, he will be benefited. At least he will see, “Oh, they have taken so much price. Let me see what is there.” If he reads one sloka, his life will be successful. This is such nice things. Therefore we are stressing so much, “Please distribute book, distribute book, distribute book.” A greater mridanga.  We are chanting, playing our mridanga. It is heard within this room or little more.
But this mridanga will go home to home, country to country, community to community.

The Importance Hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam

Submitted by Narasimha Dasa

**newrule

In the first and second cantos of Srimad-Bhagavatam emphasis is given to the importance of hearing Bhagavatam for the sake of liberation. This hearing is best done in an assembly of devotees and regularly, such as in a daily class or discussion group. The Bhagavatam was originally imparted in the assembly of great sages headed by Srila Sukadeva Gosvami, who heard it from Srila Vyasadeva, and then again in the assembly of devotees headed by Sri Suta Gosvami, who heard it from Sukadeva Gosvami.
TEXT 32: That very Srimad-Bhagavatam I shall recite before you because you are the most sincere devotee of Lord Krishna. One who gives full attention and respect to hearing Srimad-Bhagavatam achieves unflinching faith in the Supreme Lord, the giver of salvation.
Purport: “In Bhagavad Gita it is confirmed that to be in association with the Supreme Personality of Godhead by full surrender in transcendental love frees one from the miseries inflicted by the laws of material existence.” (SB. 2.7.32, Purport)
Non-sectarian God Realization:
Various scriptures in the Vedic world and outside where created especially for certain classes of men of different times and places. In other words, such scriptures are not universal or timeless or fully spiritual. Because Srimad-Bhagavatam focuses primarily on pure devotional service and never encourages karma-kanda, astanga-yoga, jnana–kanda, mundane piety, or other external paths that aim at material elevation, Lord Chaitanya highly praised Bhagavatam, calling it “the spotless Purana.”

The Special Concession For A Devotee

Submitted by Vidura Mahatma Dasa

**newrule

Harikeśa: I’m curious about the destination of a neophyte devotee. If a neophyte devotee is with determination endeavoring for purification but he were to meet with death as he is still influenced by the lower modes, although he is seriously trying, then does he take another birth or does he go to Kṛṣṇa?

Prabhupāda: No, he has to take another birth. If he is not completely purified, he has to suffer another birth. Nobody is allowed to enter into the spiritual unless he is cent percent pu**newrulere. No allowance. Then he has to… Therefore it is said, śucīnāṁ śrīmatāṁ gehe yoga-bhraṣṭo sañjāyate [Bg. 6.41]. He is given chance, another chance, to take birth in a very pure brāhmaṇa family or rich family so that he may take again the chance, not in, he is allowed to enter. He is given a good chance again. That is his benefit. Even if you are failure, still, your next birth as a very first-class human being is guaranteed. Not for others. It is only for the yogis. If he is… Therefore it is said that “What is the loss even if he is failure?” Tyaktvā sva-dharmaṁ caraṇāmbujaṁ harer bhajann apakvo ‘tha patet tato yadi yatra kva va abhadram abhūd amuṣya kim [SB 1.5.17]. This verse is very important. Even by sentiment one comes to Kṛṣṇa consciousness and discharges the regulative duties, chants Hare Kṛṣṇa, his next life is guaranteed as a human being. Even he does it for some time—he is not perfect—still, his next life is guaranteed. But others, there is no such guarantee. Even if he discharges his so-called duties, material duties, there is no guarantee that he’ll become a human being. [break] Continue reading →

Animal killers will never understand God & Bhagavad gita and Bible quotes side by side

**newrule

Hare Krsna-

Below Srila Prabhupada speaks about Jesus Christ when a young boy how he condemned those killing animals in the synagogue, he was against this cruel and sinful behavior. But today (Christmas day or any day) millions of so called Christians will be filling their bellies with the flesh of slaughtered animals. This Jesus condemned-Thou shalt not kill !

damaghosa das
———————————-

Lecture : Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.16.21 — Hawaii, January 17, 1974

“I have read one book, Lord Jesus Christ, when he was a young boy he was very much shocked when he saw that animal-killing is going on in the synagogue. Therefore he differentiated from the Jews and he started his own religion, Christian religion. Is it not a fact? Am I right? Why… He was also a Jew. Why he deviated? Why he deviated from the Jews? Because when he saw in his young age that animals are being killed in the synagogue, he differed, “No, no, this is horrible. This should be stopped.” Therefore, his first commandment is “Thou shall not kill.” Am I wrong or right? Eh? That was his first impression, that people should stop killing. So who is Christian? Everyone is violating this first commandment, what to speak of other commandments. Everyone. So it is very difficult to find a real Christian. But if you violate the commandments of Christ, then what kind of Christian you are? This is our question. Who will answer this?”

Below Srila Prabhupada explains how Lord Buddha cheated the atheists into following him by denying the existence of God (Himself) and by telling them to stop killing animals in the name of the scriptures. He gives a nice example of how a parent or guardian of a child will sometimes cheat the child by saying one thing just to get him to do the right thing. But this is not cheating because it has the welfare of the foolish child in mind by the wise parent. So by getting the Buddhists to stop killing animals, eventually they would in some future birth get a better chance to understand that religious principles do not include slaughtering innocent animals and then calling that “religion”. Wherever there is no mercy (for animals) then there is no religion present.

may 21 1969 New Vrndavana

Prabhupāda: All right. You please sit down. So the boy is satisfied that “I am not going to a school. This gentleman is very nice. I didn’t want to go to school, and he says, ‘Yes, don’t go to school.’ But “You sit down here. What is this?” “This is cow.” “And what is this?” “This is cow’s leg.” “What is this?” “One leg, two leg.” That means he is being educated, but he does not know. He says that “Ah…”

So Lord Buddha’s philosophy is like that. The atheistic people, they are against God. “Yes, there is no God. But you take this philosophy, ahiṁsā. Don’t kill animals.” That means if they stop animal-killing, then one day they will be able to understand what is God. Some day. That is Buddha philosophy. He situated the atheistic people on the line of understanding God. So this is, in one way, cheating. But this cheating is not cheating. Just like father or guardian sometimes cheats the young boy. That is not cheating; that is for his good. But actually, if you take the, I mean to say, behavior, it is something like cheating. So the Māyāvāda philosophy… This Buddha philosophy is also another Māyāvāda philosophy. Both of them are, on the face value, atheistic, denying the existence of God. One is saying, “There is no God”; another is saying, “It is impersonal,” in this way. But our philosophy is neither atheistic nor impersonal. It is directly person. Īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ [Bs. 5.1]. Directly we say, “There is …” Kṛṣṇa, in the Bhagavad-gītā, says, mattaḥ parataraṁ nāsti: “There is nobody greater than Me.” If God is great, how anybody can be greater than Him? It is right. Eh? Nānyat parataraṁ nāsti: “There is nothing more greater than Me.” Ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavaḥ: [Bg. 10.8] “I am the origin of everything.” Vedānta-sūtra says, “Brahman, or the Supreme Absolute Truth, is the source of everything.” And here is the direct answer by Kṛṣṇa, ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavaḥ: “I am the source of everything.” So we follow this philosophy. Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement means we directly take Bhagavad-gītā as the evidence of existence of God.

Guru means- heavy with knowledge

**newrule

Below are a few statements by Srila Prabupada regarding how the bona fide spiritual master cuts our attachments to this material world and he mentions just like you cut with a scissors, you show no mercy while cutting. Similarly the guru when he speaks to his students, he shows no mercy to our material attachments. Therefore the bona fide guru is both heavy like a thunderbolt and soft life a rose. These quotes show his heavy nature …

Therefore Kṛṣṇa advises to his devotees that “Don’t plan anything. You rascal, you nonsense, you don’t give Me trouble. (laughter) Please surrender unto Me. Just go under My plan; you’ll be happy. You are making plan, you are unhappy; I am also unhappy. I am also unhappy. (laughter) So many plans are coming daily, and I’ll have to fulfill.”

Competent to Make Disciples

By Narasimha das
Submitted by Yasoda nandana Dasa
**newrule
[This conversation may not be correctly transcribed. That should be checked out if anyone wants to use it. Can’t remember where I got it. Probably from my very old Kindle.]
All very good comments from Damaghosa, Naveen Krishna, Dhira Govinda and Yasoda-nandana. Very good point Damaghosa makes about sannyasa being banned. Yasoda’s and Dhira Govinda’s comments reminded me of a recent vivid Prabhupada dream I had, but doubters may not accept this line of thinking. Srila Prabhupada’s personal presence in murti form is not a fact for everyone. As Jesus said, “Cast not your pearls before swine.” The gbc posers, as Dhira Govinda reveals, deny that great Vaishnavas are equal to the Supreme Lord in freedom, potency and status. They feel the praises and prayers we sing in guru-vandana are just customary hyperbole that can be applied to any poser. They don’t understand how the topmost Vaishnava is powerful due to empowerment from Krishna. They are, at best, veda-vada-ratas with no transcendental realizations due to their ulterior motives and deceit.
Anyway this specific question of the status of the murti was already asked by a disciple and answered by Srila Prabhupada in a conversation Oct.27th, 1975, Nairobi, as cited in SPS page 17. (Contrary to a recent suggestion posted on this string, I would suggest that devotees carefully read and reread SPS as a study guide for Srila Prabhupada’s vani in regards to essential conclusions and completely discard Mr. Cant’s TFO.)
Guest: “After you, is any decision made who will take over?”

Ecclesiastical “Gurus” vs. Eternal Gurus

By Narasimha das

Submitted by Yasoda nandana Dasa

**newrule

In his Purport to Srimad-Bhagavatam, 2.9.43, Srila Prabhupada describes who is a genuine disciple and who is a genuine spiritual master. The original guru is Lord Sri Krishna and the original disciple is Lord Brahma. Devotees in the Brahma Sampradaya receive transcendental knowledge through the paramapara coming through Narada Muni, Vyasadeva, Sukadeva Goswami—and other great paramahamsas in this line of succession. All this is described.

Qualifications of Genuine Disciples and Gurus:

Those who attempt to understand Vedic knowledge through grammar alone are not allowed access into the pure transcendental knowledge of bhakti-yoga. Such jnanis, yogis, karmis, and even prakrita-bhaktas, generally try to capture Vedic knowledge through scholarship, or under the tutorship of institutional leaders or professional clerics or pundits. Because they have not surrendered to a “realized person”, a pure devotee, they remain on the mundane plane.

“One who is now the disciple is the next spiritual master. And one cannot be a bona fide and authorized spiritual master unless one has been strictly obedient to his spiritual master.” (SB.2.9.43, Purport)

Are Ecclesiastical Gurus Genuine?

Those who are disobedient, or those who never surrender to the real acharya, cannot be counted as disciples in the eternal paramapara. They can never be real gurus or disciples but are, at best, veda-vada-ratas—according to Srila Prabhupada’s purports.
