SP explains universal makeup and asks some tough questions

March 18 1976 morning walk Mayapura

Prabhupāda: So why the moon is, particularly rises from the eastern side? The moon, according to the...

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Scientists.

Prabhupāda: The moon is going round like this. So why the moon is rising from the eastern side? It is going around. Why it appears from the eastern side?

Devotee: They say because the earth is spinning on an axis.

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Paca-draviḍa: ‘Cause the earth is turning.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: That’s a very good question. (laughter)

Gurudāsa: What’s the answer, Śrīla Prabhupāda?

Prabhupāda: So you answer. He has understood.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: According to Bhāgavatam, the moon is not going around the earth. It is revolving around Mount Sumeru. Isn’t it?

Prabhupāda: Yes. According Bhāgavata, that is a different thing. But this…

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: But why the moon should simply follow that same pattern…

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: …going east to west, east to west? Why not…?

Bhavānanda: Random.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: At random. Sometimes rising from the south.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Sometimes, perhaps, from the north.

Haṁsadūta: Well, they say it has a fixed orbit around the earth.

Prabhupāda: Eh?

Haṁsadūta: It has a fixed orbit around the earth.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Who fixed the orbit?

Jayatīrtha: Kṛṣṇa.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Chance.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Chance.

Prabhupāda: And the sun is also rising from the east. But sun is fixed up, and the moon is moving. So why they are coming from the same side?

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Wonderful question. These are wonderful things.

Why we dont eat eggs—SP

WHY WE DONT EAT EGGS–SP

Lots of peas and zucchini coming in now-who needs eggs?
June 23 1975 LA conversation with Dr John Mize
John Mize: The question has been asked about the unfertilized eggs, why they should not be eaten.
Prabhupāda: Unfertilized, but there is potency of fertilization. You check the progress of one living entity coming out of it.
John Mize: Once the egg is laid, there is no chance for it to be fertilized.
Prabhupāda: No, egg is… The living entity is already there. Just like a woman is pregnant means the living entity is already there. So as soon as there is egg, the living entity is already there. It is taking time to come out. Just in the womb of the mother, the child is taking time to grow and become fit to come out.
John Mize: True, but the egg in the mother has been fertilized by the male sperm, whereas the egg laid by a chicken was not fertilized…
Prabhupāda: Not necessarily. They have got that potency. There are four kinds of birth: from the egg, from the vegetable, from fermentation, and from embryo. So from any of these four kinds of sources the living entity come out. Aṇḍa-ja, udbij-ja, jaraya-ja, and sveda-ja, the Sanskrit name. Sveda-ja, simply by perspiration. Just like unclean bed they produce bugs. The man gets perspiration, bad perspiration, and in contact with air, with this perspiration, the living entity comes. That is bug. This is called sveda-ja, “out of perspiration.” Your coat, shirt, if you don’t cleanse, or your body is unclean, you will find so many moths within the shirt. How it is coming? From the perspiration, bad perspiration, bad smell. Not that every time the male female combination required. There are other sources also.
Devotee: Śrīla Prabhupāda, that is called spontaneous generation and scientists have so-called proven that that cannot occur. It’s called a folk myth or something like this, folklore, that birth can take place without the male and female union.
Prabhupāda: No. How it is coming from the bed, unclean bed. How it is coming the grass? They are also living entity. The seeds are already there. They are like egg. And as soon as there is watering then it is fructified and it comes. Similarly, the egg…, fermentation, what is called, fermentation?
John Mize: Fertilization.
Prabhupāda: Fertilization. Not fertilize. The birds sit on the egg.
John Mize: Incubation.
Prabhupāda: Incubation, yes. They are artificially incubating, and the chickens are coming from the egg.
John Mize: If it’s been fertilized.
Prabhupāda: Yes. No, not fertilized. They are keeping in certain temperature.
John Mize: It has to have both, fertilization and incubation.
Prabhupāda: Both?
John Mize: Both. The egg cannot become a chicken unless it has been fertilized.
Prabhupāda: Anyway, that… It is coming out of that egg, so there is life. We do not recommend, prohibition of eggs because living entity. It is not very good food. It agitates the senses. Therefore we prohibit. Yes?
Some Conclusions—Srila Prabhupada gives 4 reasons why we don’t eat eggs

No more desire for material enjoyment…he is fit for sannyasa–SP

Feb 26 1976 Mayapura Conversations

Prabhupāda: …no more desire of material enjoyment he is fit for sannyāsa. Anyone who sees: “Oh, this car is very nice. This beautiful wife is very… A very beautiful woman is very nice,” he should not think of taking sannyāsa. Viṣa-bhakṣaṇād apy asādhu: “Such desires is most abominable, more than taking poison.” To commit suicide by taking poison is most abominable thing, because he’s going to be a ghost. He’ll be punished to become a ghost, those who commit suicide. Or, if one is suddenly killed and he has so many desires, he becomes ghost. Therefore viṣa-bhakṣaṇa, taking poison, and die untimely, is most abominable, or commit suicide. By the material law also, to attempt to commit suicide is criminal. You know that?
Devotees: Yeah.
Prabhupāda: Yes. It is criminal. (Bengali) If you take s annyāsa… Just like there are so many sannyāsīs, for filling up the belly. Wherever you go they give some alms. But in…, outside India, who cares for the sannyāsī? Then why you should be eager to take sannyāsa and cheat yourself? You cannot cheat others, but you can cheat yourself.
Hṛdayānanda: Outside India a sannyāsī will starve.
Prabhupāda: (laughs) So I do not know why our disciples are so anxious to take sannyāsa, at least those who are outside. Everyone comes: “Give me sannyāsa.” What is the idea?
Jayapatākā: Freedom from authority.
Prabhupāda: Eh? Eh? Who cares him, for authority.
Jayapatākā: No, they, they don’t want to take order as brahmacārī. If they’re sannyāsī they think they can do as they feel.
Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: They all want to become leaders.
Prabhupāda: So what kind of leader? If you cannot lead others, what kind of leader?
Jayapatākā: That’s why a brahmacārī should…
Prabhupāda: If you mislead them, if you mislead them, then what is the use of taking leadership?
Jayapatākā: That’s why that system where a brahmacārī is recommended for one year and then he proves himself by doing some extraordinary preaching work is a very good system. Otherwise, anyone just comes and by pressurizing and begging and pleading, then they try to take sannyāsa. Then they don’t stay to the path.
Prabhupāda: Sannyāsa means ultimate success, because this human life is meant for becoming disgusted with this material life: “No more.” Material life means to take a body and enjoy this material āhāra-nidrā, sleeping twenty-four hours, eating like elephant, and sex life like a monkey, these animals. This is material life, eating, sleeping, mating, and always afraid of. This is material life. And human life means to take freedom from these four things: no more afraid, no more sex, no more hankering after eating or sleeping. That is success. Everyone… You’ll see in the sparrow in the morning. They’re enjoying sex. So this is material life: eating, sleeping, mating and fearing. Āhāra-nidrā-bhaya-maithunaṁ ca. And spiritual life means to become free from all this nonsense. That is spiritual life. They do not know what is spiritual life. The whole world, they do not know what is spiritual life. This is spiritual life, to become free from these four abominable things.
Hṛdayānanda: They are trying to increase these four things.
Prabhupāda: That means cheating themselves. What is the use of taking sannyāsa and cheat yourself? Material life means punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām [SB 7.5.30], repeatedly doing the same thing. Either as human being or as monkey or as a small ant or the demigods, but doing the business is the same, four things: eating, sleeping, mating and fearing. In different scale, doing the same business. Therefore it is called punaḥ punaḥ, “again and again,” carvita-carvaṇānām, “chewing the chewed.” If one is sober, he thinks that “These four business, I have done many, many lives, as sparrow, or as jackal, or as demigod, and I have got this human form. Again I am doing this? So what is benefit of this human form of life?” This is sense. “I got this valuable life, and I am still doing the same thing as dogs and cats and sparrows? Then what is the difference between me and the dogs?” That is sense. “What is my better engagement?” That better engagement is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Then his life is successful. Otherwise what is the use of…? Again become a sparrow. Again wait for millions of years to come by evolutionary process to the human form of life. You see? This is going on. Punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām adānta-gobhir viśatāṁ tamisram [SB 7.5.30]. Because they cannot control the sense, they are going in the darkest part of this material existence.
Dayānanda: Śrīla Prabhupāda, it seems that in youth the desire to enjoy is so much stronger than in old age.
Prabhupāda: Hm?
Dayānanda: It seems that in youth it is, the desire to enjoy is stronger than in old age.
Prabhupāda: That is foolishness. An old man is still stronger, but instruments are finished. He cannot enjoy. But the desire is there. You don’t think that old man has got less desire than the young man. He has got the desire, but his instrument is finished.

yogis stool passing and fly pasting stories by SP

Dec 7 1975 conversations Vrndavana
Prabhupāda: Yes. On the other land. Make a shed immediately and keep some cows. And Viśvambhara, he is experienced. He will help. [break] …necessary vairāgya, there is no need. We don’t approve that. Yuktāhāra-vihāras ca. What you require for keeping health but not to eat too much. But what is absolutely required must be done.
Aksayānanda: I heard that if you pass stool more than once a day you become a bhogī? You are called a bhogī?
Prabhupāda: Yes.
Aksayānanda: Does that mean a serious devotee should only pass stool once a day?
Prabhupāda: Don’t artificially do that. (laughter) First of all become yogi. Then do it.
Aksayānanda: Yes. Of course, it can only be done by Kṛṣṇa’s mercy, but one should at least try for that.
Prabhupāda:HareKṛṣṇa. Jaya. Don’t try for passing stool once. (laughter) That does not make you a yogi.
Bhavananda: Yogināmapisarveṣāṁmad-gatenāntarātmanā [Bg. 6.47].
Prabhupāda: Antara… Yes. That makes you yogi, not by passing stool. (laughter) HareKṛṣṇa. [break] Huh?

What does it mean to be- outside the Param Para?

Adi 7.48-–On the basis of scriptures like Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, which reveal these confidential directions, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu instructed Sanātana Gosvāmī regarding all the regular activities of a devotee.
PURPORT-In the paramparā system, the instructions taken from the bona fide spiritual master must also be based on revealed Vedic scriptures. One who is in the line of disciplic succession cannot manufacture his own way of behavior. There are many so-called followers of the Vaiṣṇava cult in the line of Caitanya Mahāprabhu who do not scrupulously follow the conclusions of the śāstras, and therefore they are considered to be apa-sampradāya, which means “outside of the sampradāya.” Some of these groups are known as āula, bāula, kartābhajā, neḍā, daraveśa, sāṅi sahajiyā, sakhībhekī, smārta, jata-gosāñi, ativāḍī, cūḍādhārī and gaurāṅga-nāgarī. In order to follow strictly the disciplic succession of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, one should not associate with these apasampradāya communities.
One who is not taught by a bona fide spiritual master cannot understand the Vedic literature. To emphasize this point, Lord Kṛṣṇa, while instructing Arjuna, clearly said that it was because Arjuna was His devotee and confidential friend that he could understand the mystery of the Bhagavad-gītā. It is to be concluded, therefore, that one who wants to understand the mystery of revealed scriptures must approach a bona fide spiritual master, hear from him very submissively and render service to him. Then the import of the scriptures will be revealed. It is stated in the Vedas (Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 6.23):yasya deve parā bhaktir yathā deve tathā gurau
tasyaite kathitā hy arthāḥ prakāśante mahātmanaḥ
“The real import of the scriptures is revealed to one who has unflinching faith in both the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the spiritual master.” Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura advises, sādhu-śāstra-guru-vākya, hṛdaye kariyā aikya. The meaning of this instruction is that one must consider the instructions of the sādhu, the revealed scriptures and the spiritual master in order to understand the real purpose of spiritual life. Neither a sādhu (saintly person or Vaiṣṇava) nor a bona fide spiritual master says anything that is beyond the scope of the sanction of the revealed scriptures. Thus, the statements of the revealed scriptures correspond to those of the bona fide spiritual master and saintly persons. One must therefore act with reference to these three important sources of understanding. https://prabhupadabooks.com/cc/adi/7/48

Some Conclusions--From the above we collect this important information. To understand the param para sampradaya one must be like Arjuna-a devotee and confidential friend of the Lord. If one acts properly, following strictly the bona fide guru, then he or she will understand the sastra. However if one acts in a way that is improper like offending  Vaisnavas, then it is simply not possible to understand Krsna, nor how His energies are working.
So when one offends others, commits sins, speculates, or a host of other offenses to the Holy Names, does this mean at that point in time this “devotee” is in or out of the param para?  If one is outside the param para does that mean he has become a sahijiya? Let us consider the following.

submission service then inquiry to guru

April 16 1976 Bombay conversations

Dr. Patel: That is Albert Einstein, and that was the grandfather of the modern scientists. So I say the scientists are not as atheist as people think.
Abhirāma(?): When Albert Einstein suggested that there must be a supreme universe, then the other scientists began to say that he was crazy. They said, “He has become too old.”
Dr. Patel: Yes, yes, yes.
Abhirāma: Actually they did not believe his theory.
Dr. Patel: You are right. I mean, all intelligent men in past used to…
Prabhupāda: Hare Kṛṣṇa. Jaya. [break] …scientist. Tad viddhi praṇipātena [Bg. 4.34].
Dr. Patel: But he did not the paripraśnena sevayā. I do it.
Prabhupāda: No, he thinks not yet fit to make paripraśna.
Dr. Patel: I do it
Prabhupāda: That is. That is scientist. He thinks himself not fit to make any question. Tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena [Bg. 4.34]. When the praṇipāta is sufficiently mature, then he can make paripraśna-accompanied by sevā. Otherwise paripraśna is a waste of time. According to our Vedic system, we should not make any question to any person whose answer I cannot accept toto. Then I shall. Otherwise no use of wasting time. Praṇipāta means that you are accepting that “Here I have come. His answer will be complete.” No further question. But if there is little doubt, he can submissively make question. Just like Arjuna made question to Kṛṣṇa that “You say millions of years ago You spoke this science to…”
———————————————————
BG 4.34 purport….…Unless there is submission and service, inquiries from the learned spiritual master will not be effective. One must be able to pass the test of the spiritual master, and when he sees the genuine desire of the disciple, he automatically blesses the disciple with genuine spiritual understanding. In this verse, both blind following and absurd inquiries are condemned. One should not only hear submissively from the spiritual master; but one must also get a clear understanding from him, in submission and service and inquiries. A bona fide spiritual master is by nature very kind toward the disciple. Therefore when the student is submissive and is always ready to render service, the reciprocation of knowledge and inquiries becomes perfect.

Below-some Garden produce just picked. The red ones are hawthorne berries-very good for the heart and circulatory system. And of course everyone recognizes peppers. The large ones on the left are Italian paprikas, which we will cut up and dry, the smaller ones on the right side are  sweet banana peppers
This, below, is just a small  part of our winter food program of storing food.
kāmaṁ vavarṣa parjanyaḥ sarva-kāma-dughā mahī
siṣicuḥ sma vrajān gāvaḥ payasodhasvatīr mudā
TRANSLATION–During the reign of Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira, the clouds showered all the water that people needed, and the earth produced all the necessities of man in profusion. Due to its fatty milk bag and cheerful attitude, the cow used to moisten the grazing ground with milk.
PURPORT–The basic principle of economic development is centered on land and cows. The necessities of human society are food grains, fruits, milk, minerals, clothing, wood, etc. One requires all these items to fulfill the material needs of the body. Certainly one does not require flesh and fish or iron tools and machinery. During the regime of Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira, all over the world there were regulated rainfalls. Rainfalls are not in the control of the human being. The heavenly King Indradeva is the controller of rains, and he is the servant of the Lord. When the Lord is obeyed by the king and the people under the king’s administration, there are regulated rains from the horizon, and these rains are the causes of all varieties of production on the land. Not only do regulated rains help ample production of grains and fruits, but when they combine with astronomical influences there is ample production of valuable stones and pearls. Grains and vegetables can sumptuously feed a man and animals, and a fatty cow delivers enough milk to supply a man sumptuously with vigor and vitality. If there is enough milk, enough grains, enough fruit, enough cotton, enough silk and enough jewels, then why do the people need cinemas, houses of prostitution, slaughterhouses, etc.? What is the need of an artificial luxurious life of cinema, cars, radio, flesh and hotels? Has this civilization produced anything but quarreling individually and nationally? Has this civilization enhanced the cause of equality and fraternity by sending thousands of men into a hellish factory and the war fields at the whims of a particular man? Link to this page: https://prabhupadabooks.com/sb/1/10/4

more devotee concoctions-wearing deity paraphernalia on wrist

April 7 1976 Vrndavana morning walk
Akṣayānanda: [break] ...thread from the Deity, the old sacred thread, and they tie it on their wrist. They tie it here.
Prabhupāda: Who?
Akṣayānanda: Some of the devotees have started to do that now.
Prabhupāda: Why?
Akṣayānanda: I don’t know. It’s just like wearing beads. The sacred thread from the Deity, after replacing, they take the old one and they wear it here.
Prabhupāda: Who has told them?
Akṣayānanda: I don’t know.
Prabhupāda: Then why…
Akṣayānanda: Well, I told one boy to stop it, and because I couldn’t quote any authority, he keeps wearing…
Prabhupāda: No, no, there is no author…. Where is his authority?
Akṣayānanda: Yes.
Prabhupāda: This nonsense should be stopped.
Akṣayānanda: Yes, I thought it was wrong. That’s why I mentioned it. I wanted to make sure.
Prabhupāda: Stop this.
Akṣayānanda: Okay. Sure.
Hari–śauri: I think their idea is that because it’s prasādam, it’s from the Deity, that they’re able to wear it.
Prabhupāda: That is another concoction. The sacred thread is not used like that, in the hand.
Akṣayānanda: I thought it was wrong. It seems like some kind of fashion or something, concocted fashion.
Hari–śauri: [break] …small black beads that the devotees are wearing from Rādhā–kuṇḍa. They have a string of beads made of clay from Rādhā–kuṇḍa. Are they…?
Prabhupāda: Rādhā–kuṇḍa clay is not bad.
Hari–śauri: So it’s all right to wear them?
Prabhupāda: Not very constantly.
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Sometimes I think, Śrīla Prabhupāda, that you‘re worried that one thing will lead to the next. Actually all we have to do is follow your example.
Akṣayānanda: Yes, we don’t have to add anything. What can we add?
Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: What is the use of it?
Akṣayānanda: What can we add?
Prabhupāda: There is a proverb in Bengali that the crows, they eat stool. But when the crow is very young, he eats more stool. [break] …tendency always, how to become hippie, as soon as there is little opportunity.
Akṣayānanda: Yes, it’s something we have to guard against very carefully.
Prabhupāda: Don’t allow them. Don’t allow all these.
Akṣayānanda: Even in India people say like that, “Oh, you are hippies?”
Prabhupāda: As soon as you become hippie, immediately your all prestige will go.
 (end)

Therefore I advise you that we are working on a different platform-SP

May 25 1969 letter
So I don’t think there is any cause of discouragement because we are working on a different platform.
Recently when I was in Columbus there was a big meeting, and more than one thousand students attended. Poet Allan Ginsberg was there with me for chanting, and all the students were responsive immediately. Therefore I advise you that we are working on a different platform. We are working neither on the sensual platform, nor on the mental platform, nor on the intellectual platform. We are working completely on the spiritual platform. The concept of European, American, or Indian is based on the bodily platform. So long one is under the impression that he is this body, he cannot make much progress in this movement. Lord Caitanya says that factually all living entities are the servants of Krishna. This servitorship cannot be rendered from the material platform, because Krishna is not matter. He is Sat–Cit–Ananda Vigraha. Anyone trying to serve Krishna from the material platform of body, mind and intelligence cannot appreciate this fact. One has to become free from the contamination of matter, represented in gross and subtle forms as body, mind, intelligence and ego. Until then, one is not a pure devotee. In the Narada Pancaratra it is clearly stated that one has to become free from all material designations. So long as one is under the cover of material designations, he cannot serve Krishna. Therefore, we have to transcend this position by cleansing our hearts from such rubbish concept of life that I am American, I am European, I am Indian, I am this or that. Anyone keeping himself under such impression, but at the same time trying to get into Krishna Consciousness is called neophyte devotee, or prakrta.
Lord Caitanya has given us a very nice method of chanting Hare Krishna, and if we execute this without any offense, we can transcend this prakrta platform and come to the spiritual platform of serving Krishna. And unless we serve Krishna there is no possibility of getting His Grace, and without His Grace it is not possible to preach Krishna Consciousness. Therefore, we should more depend to receive His Grace then to depend on mental or intellectual activities.

SP explains guru tatta in relation to Communism

March 16 1976 Mayapura conversation

Prabhupāda: You have got the same eyes, but when it is dark you cannot see. Then what is the value of your eyes? You see under condition. That is not absolute. [break] …should be informed that why you have changed? Now, the Russian and Chinese, first of all they began believing Lenin or Marx.

Madhudviṣa: Marx was the original.

Prabhupāda: Now they are not in agreement. Why?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: They saw practically… It was impractical.

Prabhupāda: That means for advancement of knowledge you have to change. They accept this theory, revolution. So if you get better situation, why you’ll not change?

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: They accept a better theory when it is presented.

Prabhupāda: Yes. It is presented. This is the beginning, that “Your knowledge is imperfect. You are believing your eyes, but that is not perfect knowledge. You have to see with knowledge.” Paśyati jāna… Paśyanti jāna-cakṣuṣā. Śāstra-cakṣuṣāt. That is seeing, not seeing like a child. A child is seeing, a motor car is running, a airplane is running. He thinks a wonderful machine, but it is not the machine. It is the pilot. It is the driver. A child cannot see it. The father knows that it is not the machine. The machine may be however perfectly made; it cannot run. There must be a perfect pilot also. Just like we get on aeroplane. There are hundreds of men. If there is any trouble, then the pilot can stop it, not the hundreds of men.

Mahendra: In these Communist countries, Śrīla Prabhupāda, such as Russia…

Prabhupāda: Not Communist country, everywhere, a pilot is required. Not Communist country.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: Every country has a leader.

Prabhupāda: Yes. So these… All this ism, Communism, this ism, this ism, beginning from that Greek history, so many changes have been made in Europe, leaders, sometimes Napoleon, sometimes Mussolini, sometimes Hitler. It is going on. So where is the perfect situation? You have changed so many leaders for so many years in the history, but where is your perfect situation?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: We have one leader, and our situation is perfect, and we are not changing that leader.

Note–TKG sure changed his tune later on)

Prabhupāda: Yes. That is perfection. We have taken Kṛṣṇa as leader. We are not taking any other leader.

Mahāṁśa: In thousands of years.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Hundreds and thousands of years.

Prabhupāda: Millions of years.

Mahāṁśa: So many constitutions, they have been amended so many times. But the Bhagavad-gītā has not been amended since so many millions of years.

Prabhupāda: It cannot be amended. Just like this rule, dehino ‘smin yathā dehe [Bg. 2.13]. When the change of body, how you can change the rule? A perfect definition. You cannot change it. [break] …religion, the so-called religion, it is changed. Formerly there was no Christianity and now Christianity. Now, from Christianity, so many others, so many others. That is not religion.

Revatīnandana: If you say that your leader is perfect and you do not change your leader, we see that in India… This is where Kṛṣṇa came. He is your leader, but they do not follow Kṛṣṇa any more and India is in trouble.

Prabhupāda: Yes. That is the right thing.

Revatīnandana: But why do they not follow if He is perfect leader?

Prabhupāda: That is their misfortune.

5 Main principles we need to know and practice-SP

Hare Krsna—Below we have assembled some nice verses and quotes which, according to Srila Prabhupada exactly explain our positions of purity or impurity within these bodies and minds. If we have ever wondered why devotional things take so long to get done, or not even at all, here below are some clues as to why.
The principle of envy is obvious all over this material world but totally absent in the spiritual world due to the ill effects it causes to others. Below we have attempted to show why it must be thoroughly cleansed from our hearts.

damaghosa das
—————————-
1.) Why was  deity worship introduced?

SB 7.14.39-TRANSLATION–My dear King, when great sages and saintly persons saw mutually disrespectful dealings at the beginning of Tretā-yuga, Deity worship in the temple was introduced with all paraphernalia.

SB 3.29.22–One who worships the Deity of Godhead in the temples but does not know that the Supreme Lord, as Paramātmā, is situated in every living entity’s heart, must be in ignorance and is compared to one who offers oblations into ashes.
PURPORT-…….. Therefore persons who profess to belong to some religious sect but who do not feel the presence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in every living entity, and everywhere else, are in the mode of ignorance.
If, without this preliminary knowledge of the Lord’s omnipresence, one simply attaches himself to the rituals in a temple, church or mosque, it is as if he were offering butter into ashes rather than into the fire.
2.) Why are householders envious of each other?
Why does even the Bible say love thy neighbor-as thy self?
“In the age of Kali, all the householders are jealous of one another because they are blind to the knowledge of ultimate truth.”–SP
Everyone in this world is envious-SB 1.1.2 — London, August 18, 1971
Everyone is envious. If his neighbor, if his brother, if his friend becomes more prosperous than himself, he becomes envious. This is material nature. Similarly, in our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, if we become envious, “Oh, my Godbrother, oh, he has become so popular. He is making so much progress. So put some impediments towards his progressive path,” this is also material. The Vaikuṇṭha consciousness is that if your neighbor, if your brother is prosperous or progressive, then one should think, “Oh, he’s so nice that he has served God so nicely. God is so pleased upon him that he is making so nice progress.” That is Vaikuṇṭha consciousness. And material consciousness is that “Oh, he has advanced so much. Oh, let me check him.” This is material. That is going on.
The whole world, enviousness. I remember in, long ago, about sometimes in 1936, my eldest son in Bombay—he was in school—he stood first. So his class friends became envious that “Here is a boy, he is coming from Bengal, and he has stood first.” They wanted to fight with him. My son came and complained to me that “This is the position.” Just see. Children even, envious. You see. That means this is the nature of this world. If you prosper, then your brothers and your neighbors, your friends, will be envious.
SB 2.1.2–Those persons who are materially engrossed, being blind to the knowledge of ultimate truth, leave many subject matters for hearing in human society, O Emperor.
PURPORT
In the revealed scriptures there are two nomenclatures for the householder’s life. One is gṛhastha, and the other is gṛhamedhī. The gṛhasthas are those who live together with wife and children but live transcendentally for realizing the ultimate truth. The gṛhamedhīs, however, are those who live only for the benefit of the family members, extended or centralized, and thus are envious of others. The word medhī indicates jealousy of others. The gṛhamedhīs, being interested in family affairs only, are certainly envious of others. Therefore, one gṛhamedhī is not on good terms with another gṛhamedhī, and in the extended form, one community, society or nation is not on good terms with another counterpart of selfish interest. In the age of Kali, all the householders are jealous of one another because they are blind to the knowledge of ultimate truth. They have many subject matters for hearing-political, scientific, social, economic and so on-but due to a poor fund of knowledge, they set aside the question of the ultimate miseries of life, namely miseries of birth, death, old age and disease. Factually, the human life is meant for making an ultimate solution to birth, death, old age and disease, but the gṛhamedhīs, being illusioned by the material nature, forget everything about self-realization. The ultimate solution to the problems of life is to go back home, back to Godhead, and thus, as stated in the Bhagavad-gītā (8.16), the miseries of material existence-birth, death, old age and disease-are removed.
The process of going back home, back to Godhead, is to hear about the Supreme Lord and His name, form, attributes, pastimes, paraphernalia and variegatedness. Foolish people do not know this. They want to hear something about the name, form, etc., of everything temporary, and they do not know how to utilize this propensity of hearing for the ultimate good. Misguided as they are, they also create some false literatures about the name, form, attributes, etc., of the ultimate truth. One should not, therefore, become a gṛhamedhī simply to exist for envying others; one should become a real householder in terms of the scriptural injunctions.

3.) Why did SP experience so much reluctance and envy from his Godbrothers to help him?
