Srila Prabhupada in Atlanta

One of the best things about being on the Sri Sri Radha Damodar Traveling Sankirtan Party was that when Srila Prabhupada was in America we could go see him and get very enlivened.

Srila Prabhupada arrived in Atlanta on February 28th 1975. When he first took Darshan of Sri Sri Goura Nitai he was very ecstatic and pleased. He told us he was pleased that the devotees were doing such nice Deity worship. He said he started most of the worship in most of the temples, but the devotees started it in Atlanta. He started talking about how Lord Krsna asked us to surrender; but Lord Chaitanya and Lord Nityananda are so merciful they didn’t even ask us to surrender. When he said that his voice choked up.

We got to meet Srila Prabhupada in his room. We all wore matching vests and Prabhupada hats that were made by Minaketana Ramdas. He also made one for Srila Prabhupada and he offered it to him personally. The hat was too small so it sat high on Srila Prabhupada’s head. It looked funny and we all laughed heartily except for Minaketana Ramdas. He was devastated! But since Srila Prabhupada was smiling nicely and chuckling it eased his pain and we were in bliss.

In the room Srila Prabhupada told us that if we remained brahmachari’s we would go back to Godhead; but if we got married it would be a 50% chance.

Srila Prabhupada told us if we studied the 7th Chapter of the Bhagavad Gita we would be good preachers because everything is in that chapter.

Birth in a family of yogīs or transcendentalists-those with great wisdom-is praised herein because the child born in such a family receives spiritual impetus from the very beginning of his life. It is especially the case in the ācārya or gosvāmī families. Such families are very learned and devoted by tradition and training, and thus they become spiritual masters. In India there are many such ācārya families, but they have now degenerated due to insufficient education and training. By the grace of the Lord, there are still families that foster transcendentalists generation after generation. It is certainly very fortunate to take birth in such families. (Either initiated or not ) Devotee Forehead should always be adorned with tilak and neck should always be laddened with neckbead.

Sometimes it is not practical to put tilak due to restriction in workplace but neckbead there should not be any restriction as it is neither weird nor odd.

In this 21st century every odd is a style and every style is odd . Just like a torn jeans can be upmarket or latest trend.

How imporatant neckbead is we can read from below incident
—
When I was Srila Prabhupada’s servant in Los Angeles in 1970, my neckbeads broke one day and I set them aside to restring later in the day. I went into Srila Prabhupada’s room and He immediately said, “Where are your neckbeads?”

I told Him they had broken and I was going to fix them later in the day. He said very strongly “You must go now and fix them. If you knew how dangerous it is to be in this material world without neckbeads on, you would be shaking in your boots!”

A big reason is that the Yamadutas, the monster-like servants of Lord Yamaraj, who come at the time of a person’s death to escort them in their subtle body to a place where they can suffer the results of negative karma, have orders from their master that they cannot touch a person with tilak or neckbeads on.

Instead, the Visnudutas come to protect that person and assure their safe progress into their next physical body, or ideally, back to their original spiritual body. It is so important to have kunti mala around our neck at all times, you never know when the time will come to leave the body.

Srila Prabhupada explains the exalted position or Sri Nityananda Prabhu

rāḍhadeśe janmilā ṭhākura nityānanda

gaṅgādāsa paṇḍita, gupta murāri, mukunda

SYNONYMS

rāḍha-deśe—the place where there is no Ganges; janmilā—took birth; ṭhākura nityānanda—Nityānanda Prabhu; gaṅgādāsa paṇḍita—of the name Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita; gupta murāri—of the name Murāri Gupta; mukunda—of the name Mukunda.

TRANSLATION

In Rāḍhadeśa, the part of Bengal where the Ganges is not visible, Nityānanda Prabhu, Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita, Murāri Gupta and Mukunda took birth.

PURPORT

Here rāḍha-deśe refers to the village of the name Ekacakrā in the district of Birbhum, next to Burdwan. After the Burdwan railway station there is another branch line, which is called the Loop Line of the eastern railway, and there is a railway station of the name Mallārapura. Eight miles east of this railway station Ekacakrā Village is still situated. Ekacakrā Village extends north and south for an area of about eight miles. Other villages, namely Vīracandra-pura and Vīrabhadra-pura, are situated within the area of the village of Ekacakrā. In honor of the holy name of Vīrabhadra Gosvāmī, these places are renowned as Vīracandra-pura and Vīrabhadra-pura.

In the Bengali year 1331 (A.D. 1924) a thunderbolt struck the temple of Ekacakrā-grāma. Therefore the temple is now in a broken state. Before this, there were no such accidents in that quarter. Within the temple there is a Deity of Śrī Kṛṣṇa established by Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu. The name of the Deity is Baṅkima Rāya or Bāṅkā Rāya.

Below is a very instructive youtube video with Hrdayananda and Balavanta back in the early 1970’s on national TV where they were debating with one of the main cult deprogramers (Ted Patrick) of the time. There were many devotees kidnapped by these fanatic deprogramers. Both Hrdayananda and Balavanta were leaders in the Hare Krsna Movement and as far as anyone could tell, were following all the principles laid out by our spiritual master Srila Prabhupada. These two devotees solidly and with some humor I might add, completely defeated this demoniac man and his accomplice Sandra Sacks.

So what happened to Hrdayananda das from that time- to the present?

Below, we see a present day picture of him with one of his female “friends”-and he still claims he is a sannyasi, and goes by the name-Sri Acaryadev.
If you want to know more detail than you can look at a few articles,listed below, one by his own personal servant and another by a Godbrother.

One of the main things to learn here , for all of us, is that we may have a glorious present position given to us by the spiritual master and Krsna, but that is not permanent, it can be lost due to offenses to the Spiritual Master, the Holy Names,the devotees, and other living entities in general.

One good thing, if you can call it that, is that everybody should learn from the lessons and fall downs provided by some of the original leaders of the Hare Krsna Movement-and try not to do them ourselves.

Better to follow the genuine spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, who wont fall down into gross or subtle materialism, and who CAN take us back to home back to Godhead !

Prabhupāda: Let them do whatever nonsense they are doing. Let them chant and take prasāda. We don’t mind what they are doing. That is later on. When I was chanting in Tompkinson Park I never asked them that “Don’t come here. You are drinking.” Everyone was drinking. (laughs) I know that. Everyone had illicit sex. They were coming with their boyfriend, girlfriend. I didn’t know that? Was I going to restrict them from? Let them come, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Caitanya Mahāprabhu stressed on this, mass kīrtana every night. He was not speaking philosophy. Philosophy with Sarvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, Prakāśānanda Sarasvatī, not with the mass of people. Mass of people—”Come on! Chant!” Give prasāda. This was Caitan… What they will understand, philosophy?

Devotee: They won’t understand.

Prabhupāda: Mass of people, let them chant and dance and take prasāda. So these centers are being opened for mass movement as well as class movement. In the village there is… Hardly you’ll get good, educated men. So there is no question of philosophy. Given them chance of chanting and take prasāda. It is useless to talk before them our philosophy. They’ll never understand. But they will understand prasādam. Prasādam is so nice. If there are few grains of prasāda, even the crows will come, the condemned bird. (laughs) He will also come. You do like this. So if this has been settled, do that.

Therefore, in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam it is said that this is the incarnation of God in this age. And who worships Him? The process is very simple. Just keep a picture of Lord Caitanya with His associates. Lord Caitanya is in the middle, accompanied by His principal associates—Nityānanda, Advaita, Gadādhara, and Śrīvāsa. One simply has to keep this picture. One can keep it anywhere. It is not that one has to come to us to see this picture. Anyone can have this picture in his home, chant this Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, and thus worship Lord Caitanya. That is the simple method. But who will capture this simple method? Those who have good brains. Without much bother, if one simply keeps a picture of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu at home and chants Hare Kṛṣṇa, then one will realize God. Anyone can adopt this simple method. There is no expenditure, there is no tax, nor is there any need to build a very big church or temple. Anyone, anywhere, can sit down on the road or beneath a tree and chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra and worship God. Therefore it is a great opportunity.

Srila Prabhupeda glorifies Sri Madhva

Srila Prabhupada: “Srila Madhvacarya is the original acarya for those who belong to the Madhva-Gaudiya-sampradaya.” (Srimad Bhagavatam, 6.1.40.purport

“… This Madhva-Gaudiya-sampradaya is also known as the Brahma-sampradaya because the disciplic succession originally began from Brahma. Brahma instructed the sage Narada, Narada instructed Vyasadeva, and Vyasadeva instructed Madhva Muni, or Madhvacarya…” (Krsna Book, Introduction)

CC Adi 1.19 pp. — The devotees of Orissa are called Udiyas, the devotees of Bengal are called Gaudiyas, and the devotees of southern India are known as Dravida devotees. As there are five provinces in Aryavarta, so Daksinatya, southern India, is also divided into five provinces, which are called Panca-dravida. The four Vaisnava acaryas who are the great authorities of the four Vaisnava disciplic successions, as well as Sripada Sankaracarya of the Mayavada school, appeared in the Panca-dravida provinces. Among the four Vaisnava acaryas, who are all accepted by the Gaudiya Vaisnavas, Sri Ramanuja Acarya appeared in the southern part of Andhra Pradesh at Mahabhutapuri, Sri Madhva Acarya appeared at Pajakam (near Vimanagiri) in the district of Mangalore, Sri Visnusvami appeared at Pandya, and Sri Nimbarka appeared at Mungera-patana in the extreme south.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu accepted the chain of disciplic succession from Madhva Acarya, but the Vaisnavas in His line do not accept the tattva-vadis, who also claim to belong to the Madhva-sampradaya. To distinguish themselves clearly from the tattva-vadi branch of Madhva’s descendants, the Vaisnavas of Bengal prefer to call themselves Gaudiya Vaisnavas. Sri Madhva Acarya is also known as Sri Gauda-purnananda, and therefore the name Madhva-Gaudiya-sampradaya is quite suitable for the disciplic succession of the Gaudiya Vaisnavas. Our spiritual master, Om Visnupada Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Maharaja, accepted initiation in the Madhva-Gaudiya-sampradaya.
