A few gems from Srila Prabhupada about Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura.

After fulfilling his responsibility to produce a nice child, one should take sannyāsa and engage in the perfectional paramahaṁsa stage. paramahaṁsa refers to the most highly elevated perfectional stage of life. There are four stages within sannyāsa life, and paramahaṁsa is the highest order. The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is called the paramahaṁsa-saṁhitā, the treatise for the highest class of human beings. The paramahaṁsa is free from envy. In other stages, even in the householder stage of life, there is competition and envy, but since the activities of the human being in the paramahaṁsa stage are completely engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, or devotional service, there is no scope for envy. In the same order as Kardama Muni, about one hundred years ago, Ṭhākura Bhaktivinoda also wanted to beget a child who could preach the philosophy and teachings of Lord Caitanya to the fullest extent. By his prayers to the Lord he had as his child Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī Mahārāja, who at the present moment is preaching the philosophy of Lord Caitanya throughout the entire world through his bona fide disciples.Books : Srimad-Bhagavatam : Canto 3: “The Status Quo” : SB 3.22: The Marriage of Kardama Muni and Devahuti : SB 3.22.19 : PURPORT

When Lord Viṣṇu appeared in the great arena of sacrifice at the time when King Pṛthu was performing a great sacrifice (aśvamedha), He predicted that the Kumāras would very soon come and advise the King. Therefore Pṛthu Mahārāja remembered the causeless mercy of the Lord and thus welcomed the arrival of the Kumāras, who were fulfilling the Lord’s prediction. In other words, when the Lord makes a prediction, He fulfills that prediction through some of His devotees. Similarly, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu predicted that both His glorious names and the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra would be broadcast in all the towns and villages of the world. Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura and Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Prabhupāda desired to fulfill this great prediction, and we are following in their footstepsBooks : Srimad-Bhagavatam : Canto 4: “The Creation of the Fourth Order” : SB 4.22: Prthu Maharaja’s Meeting with the Four Kumaras SB 4.22.42

The living entity’s position is herein likened to a dog’s. By chance a dog may have a very rich owner, and by chance he may become a street dog. As the dog of a rich man, he will live very opulently. Sometimes in Western countries we hear of a master leaving millions of dollars to a dog in his will. Of course, there are many dogs loitering in the street without food. Therefore, to liken the conditional existence of the living entity to that of a dog is very appropriate. An intelligent human being, however, can understand that if he has to live the life of a dog, he had best become Kṛṣṇa’s dog. In the material world a dog is sometimes elevated and is sometimes on the street, but in the spiritual world, Kṛṣṇa’s dog is perpetually, eternally happy. Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has therefore sung: vaiṣṇava ṭhākura tomāra kukura baliyā jānaha more. In this way Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura offers to become a Vaiṣṇava’s dog. A dog always keeps himself at his master’s door and does not allow any person unfavorable to the master to enter. Similarly, one should engage in the service of a Vaiṣṇava and try to please him in every respect. Unless one does so, he does not make spiritual advancement. Apart from spiritual advancement, in the material world if one does not develop his qualities in goodness, he cannot be promoted to the higher planetary system. As confirmed by Bhagavad-gītā (14.18)Books : Srimad-Bhagavatam : Canto 4: “The Creation of the Fourth Order” : SB 4.29: Talks Between Narada and King Pracinabarhi : SB 4.29.30, SB 4.29.31, SB 4.29.30-31

Thakura Srila Prabhupāda: Yes. And so-called educated, they practically guide. You’ll be surprised to know that in 1950, one of my students, he was a government statistics officer. So he went to some village, and he gave me report that the villagers inquired from him that “Babuji, agar angarej ko vote diya yai pasatela (?)”

Dr. Arnold Toynbee: Yes.

Srila Prabhupāda: You understand Hindi? No.

Dr. Arnold Toynbee: No, I don’t. No, no, no.

Srila Prabhupāda: No. The inquiry was that “If we again give votes to the Englishmen, will they come and do.” (laughs)

Dr. Arnold Toynbee: Yes, yes, yes.

Srila Prabhupāda: Yes. So they were feeling the… Actually, in India… In our childhood, we know. Every Indian felt very secure. They never expected that Britishers will go. They were so sympathetic. And now they… This is the pulse felt by that statistics officer. They are not very much satisfied with the present system of government. British administration was very much appreciated by the Indians. Even Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura appreciated. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, he has written in something, somewhere, that “The Britishers also very nice because they don’t interfere with the religious affairs.” So as soon as they changed their views and tried to divide the Hindus and Muslims, the British Empire lost. According to Queen’s declaration, the Britishers pledged that “They will not interfere with your religious affairs.” Later on, for political purposes, when they interfered with this Hindu-Muslim question, then the British Empire lost.Conversations : 1973 Conversations : July, 1973 : Room Conversation with Dr. Arnold Toynbee, Famous Historian, at his home or office — July 22, 1973, London

Srila  Prabhupāda: We are translating the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and other Vedic literature. You have seen the sample, original verse, word to word meaning, then translation, then giving a purport.

Professor La Combe: You wrote the commentary.

Srila Prabhupāda: Yes.

Professor La Combe: What is the paramparā from Caitanya?

Srila Prabhupāda: From Caitanya Mahāprabhu? Yes. The Six Gosvāmīs: Rūpa, Sanātana, Bhaṭṭa Raghunātha, Śrī Jīva, Gopāla Bhaṭṭa, Dāsa Raghunātha. The Six Gosvāmīs. Then from the Gosvāmīs there is Śrīnivāsācārya. Then from him, I think, this Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī, and then Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura. Then Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura, then Jagannātha dāsa Bābājī, then Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, then Gaura Kiśora dāsa Bābājī Mahārāja, then my Guru Mahārāja. Next we are. I am the tenth or eleventh, eleventh from Caitanya Mahāprabhu.Conversations : 1974 Conversations : June, 1974 : Room Conversation with Professor Oliver La Combe Director of the Sorbonne University — June 14, 1974, Paris :

MAY 28th Room Conversation – 1977 Analysis
(“appointment tape” fraud)

On May 28th a committee of the GBC met in Srila Prabhupada’s room and asked various questions for
the future of ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada’s intentions with regard to how initiations should be conducted
in his physical absence was clearly stated in these May 28th conversation with Satsvarupa Maharaja
:

Satsvarupa: “Then our next question concerns initiations in the future, particularly at that time when you’re no longer with us. We want to know how first and second initiations would be conducted.”
Prabhupada: “Yes; I shall recommend some of you. After this is settled up, I shall recommend some of you to act as officiating acharyas.”
Tamala Krsna: “Is that called ritvik-acharya?”
Prabhupada: “Ritvik yes.”
Satsvarupa: Then what is the relationship of that person who gives the initiation and the…
Prabhupada: He’s guru. He’s guru.
Satsvarupa: But he does it on your behalf.
Prabhupada: Yes. That is formality. Because in my presence one should not become guru, so on my behalf, on my order… Amara ajnaya guru haia. Be actually guru, but by my order.
Satsvarupa: So they may also be considered your disciples.
Prabhupada: Yes, they are disciples. Why consider? Who?
Tamala Krsna: No, he’s asking that these ritvik-acaryas, they’re officiating, giving diksa. Their… The people who they give diksa to, whose disciple are they?
Prabhupada: They’re his disciple.
Tamala Krsna: They’re his disciple.
Prabhupada: Who is initiating. He is grand disciple. [falsified transcription, Srila prabhupadas says: “His grand disciple”]

So even the description of activities of a devotees on going desires and activity in the manner of audio or writing serving Srila Prabhupada and Krsna are to be understood to be non different from the physical reality. Some materially- inconceivable things- about the spiritual world

Submitted by: Damagosha Dasa

Hare Krsna-
What we have collected below are some small, tiny tidbits of nectar which somewhat and barely describe aspects of spiritual life, the spiritual body, and the spiritual world-and all are meant to re direct our attention from matter towards spirit.

Hari bol-hope you like them

damaghosa das
————————–

Inconceivable things in the spiritual world-

Adi 5.22 purport
The residents of Vaikuṇṭha have brilliantly black complexions much more fascinating and attractive than the dull white and black complexions found in the material world. Their bodies, being spiritual, have no equals in the material world. The beauty of a bright cloud when lightning flashes on it merely hints at their beauty. Generally the inhabitants of Vaikuṇṭha dress in yellow clothing. Their bodies are delicate and attractively built, and their eyes are like the petals of lotus flowers. Like Lord Viṣṇu, the residents of Vaikuṇṭha have four hands decorated with a conchshell, wheel, club and lotus flower. Their chests are beautifully broad and fully decorated with necklaces of a brilliant diamond like metal surrounded by costly jewels never to be found in the material world. The residents of Vaikuṇṭha are always powerful and effulgent. Some of them have complexions like red coral cat’s eyes and lotus flowers, and each of them has earrings of costly jewels. On their heads they wear flowery crowns resembling garlands.

In the Vaikuṇṭhas there are airplanes, but they make no tumultuous sounds. Material airplanes are not at all safe: they can fall down and crash at any time, for matter is imperfect in every respect. In the spiritual sky, however, the airplanes are also spiritual, and they are spiritually brilliant and bright. These airplanes do not fly business executives, politicians or planning commissions as passengers, nor do they carry cargo or postal bags, for these are all unknown there. These planes are for pleasure trips only, and the residents of Vaikuṇṭha fly in them with their heavenly, beautiful, fairylike consorts. Therefore these airplanes, full of residentsof Vaikuṇṭha, both male and female, increase the beauty of the spiritual sky. We cannot imagine how beautiful they are, but their beauty may be compared to the clouds in the sky accompanied by silver branches of electric lightning. The spiritual sky of Vaikuṇṭhaloka is always decorated in this way.
The bestial civilization of eating, sleeping, fearing and sense-gratifying has misled modern man into forgetting how powerful a soul he has. As we have already described, the soul is a spiritual spark many, many times more illuminating, dazzling and powerful than the sun, moon or electricity. Human life is spoiled when man does not realize his real identity with his soul. LordCaitanya appeared with Lord Nityānanda to save man from this type of misleading civilization.

Sri Syamananda Goswami Avirbhava tithi 04 22 2016

Sri Syamananda Goswami avirbhava tithi [appearance day]

Monday, June 20, 2016 [Los Angeles, California Time]
Tuesday, June 21. 2016 [Mayapura, West Bengal Time]
compiled by Yasoda nandana dasa

Srila Prabhupada explains the unique position of Sri Syamananda Goswami.

Books : Sri Caitanya-caritamrta – 1975 Edition : Cc. Adi-lila : Adi 1: The Spiritual Masters : Adi 1.19 : PURPORT :
Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu explained this mode of devotional service in three stages, and therefore these worshipable Deities were installed in Vṛndāvana by different Gosvāmīs. They are very dear to the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas there, who visit the temples at least once a day. Besides the temples of these three Deities, many other temples have been established in Vṛndāvana, such as the temple of Rādhā-Dāmodara of Jīva Gosvāmī, the temple of Śyāmasundara of Śyāmānanda Gosvāmī, the temple of Gokulānanda of Lokanātha Gosvāmī, and the temple of Rādhā-ramaṇa of Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī. There are seven principal temples over four hundred years old that are the most important of the five thousand temples now existing in Vṛndāvana

Books : Sri Caitanya-caritamrta – 1975 Edition : Cc. Adi-lila : Adi 7: Lord Caitanya in Five Features : Adi 7.45 : PURPORT :

There are many Vaiṣṇava families in Bengal whose members, although not actually born brāhmaṇas, act as ācāryas by initiating disciples and offering the sacred thread as enjoined in the Vaiṣṇava tantras. For example, in the families of Ṭhākura Raghunandana Ācārya, Ṭhākura Kṛṣṇadāsa, Navanī Hoḍa and Rasikānanda-deva (a disciple of Śyāmānanda Prabhu), the sacred thread ceremony is performed, as it is for the caste Gosvāmīs, and this system has continued for the past three to four hundred years. Accepting disciples born in brāhmaṇa families, they are bona fide spiritual masters who have the facility to worship the śālagrāma-śilā, which is worshiped with the Deity. As of this writing, śālagrāma-śilā worship has not yet been introduced in our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, but soon it will be introduced in all our temples as an essential function of arcana-mārga (Deity worship).

Books : Sri Caitanya-caritamrta – 1975 Edition : Cc. Adi-lila : Adi 7: Lord Caitanya in Five Features : Adi 7.164 : PURPORT :

When Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī went to Vṛndāvana, there was not a single temple, but by their preaching they were gradually able to construct various temples. Sanātana Gosvāmī constructed the Madana-mohana temple, and Rūpa Gosvāmī constructed the Govindajī temple. Similarly, their nephew Jīva Gosvāmī constructed the Rādhā-Dāmodara temple, Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī constructed the Rādhā-ramaṇa temple, Śrī Lokanātha Gosvāmī constructed the Gokulānanda temple, and Śyāmānanda Gosvāmī constructed the Śyāmasundara temple. In this way, many temples were gradually constructed. For preaching, construction of temples is also necessary. The Gosvāmīs not only engaged in writing books but also constructed temples because both are needed for preaching work. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu wanted the cult of His saṅkīrtana movement to spread all over the world. Now that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has taken up this task of preaching the cult of Lord Caitanya, its members should not only construct temples in every town and village of the globe but also distribute books that have already been written and further increase the number of books. Both distribution of books and construction of temples must continue side by side in parallel lines.

Uprooting the weed seeds of material desire in our hearts by constant chanting

Submitted by: Damagosha Dasa
Hare Krsna -All glories to Srila Prabhupada !

Yesterday  my wife dug up one dandelion root plant. As you can see in the picture below, the root is about 3 feet long !! We had no idea that the simple weed called dandelion root could be so looong.

IMG_2046 IMG_2046

Anyway, it got me thinking about what it says in the Sastra about how chanting the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra will uproot all the dirty things in our hearts (weeds) and allow the real plant of bhakti yoga to grow instead. But as we all know, when you water your plants, you also inadvertently  water the weeds too. So sometimes the weeds will grow longer and better than the plants we are trying to cultivate.
I remember back in the early 70’s when I began chanting Hare Krsna mantra. I thought, this is really easy to do, and I will become liberated in this lifetime. Until we are liberated (where our original constitutional position with the Lord is revealed, by that Lord [siddha deha] ), we are still under some sort of illusion-Maya. As it turns out this heart house cleaning process requires real effort if we want to produce a nice place for the Lord in our hearts to sit down and converse with us.
Srila Prabhupada describes the act of chanting Hare Krsna as having three phases of purification. The first is the offensive stage where we may not even know the 10 offenses or even actively try to stop making them. Included in this stage is when we actually do know the list by heart, and can say it daily, but still willfully  or in ignorance commit any or all of the 10 offenses.
The Second stage is when we seriously enter the shower of sadhana bhakti yoga and actively try to eliminate these 10 offenses while we act in devotional service. This is called the clearing stage in which our bhakti is still contaminated, by anarthas, and ignorance of the true nature of the Holy Name, but we are trying to get purified. And  the third and final stage is when we arrive at the shores of pure bhakti thru pure chanting, in loving service to the Supreme Lord, and pure Love of God manifests within our hearts by this chanting process..
Please consider some of the following points made by Srila Prabhupada and other great souls.
